Tesla Model 3: End of the Internal-Combustion Engine?

Bumping an old thread. Anyone here have a Model 3? What do you think of it?

We are thinking about getting solar on the roof, and I need a car so I am thinking about maybe picking up a used Model 3 if everything pans out. Thoughts? Spend a bit more for a used Model S?

4 months ago I bought a 2018 M3 dual motor long range. My wife and I absolutely love it. It is by far the nicest car I've ever driven in 55 years. So easy to drive (one peddle drive is fantastic!) and super comfy. If you have a low charge you can pick up 100 mi. range in about 5 min. But charging at home with solar is the winner here, the cost is like an ICE car getting 150+ mpg. An expensive Supercharger is equal to about 33mpg. The M3 dual motor is plenty fast 0-60 4.1 sec. I would take it over a S. Interesting fact - as of last month the Model Y is the best selling car in the world ICE or EV!

I got a model Y Performance last year. The crossover SUV version of the model 3. Love it!

Everything starpower wrote.

I just got solar installed as well. Just waiting for PG&E approval to turn the system on.

Now is a great time to buy, with more inventory, lower prices, and tax incentive, none of which was available when I bought.

Tesla is about to come out with a refreshed version of the model 3, so it might be worth waiting a bit, or maybe worth picking a current one up as they are even further discounted right now.

Charging at home is so convenient. Instant torque anywhere in the power band never gets old.

Thanks for the feedback Starpower and bojangle. A refresh of the Model 3 would be perfect since I am looking in the used market, that should drive the price down a bit.

Everyone I talk to who has a Tesla loves it. When we get the solar system installed, I am having them install a car charger, even if I don't have an electric car yet.

Tesla cars involved in 10 of the 11 new crash deaths linked to automated-tech vehicles

In today’s third @washingtonpost
TikTok, Tesla’s Autopilot has been involved in far more crashes than previously reported.

Musk’s decisions, like stripping the vehicles of radar sensors, appear to have contributed to the reported uptick in incidents.

Went over to the Tesla spot at Stanford shopping center after work and drove a Model 3. Pretty impressive.

I’ll have to wait until after my solar system is installed because that is when they are putting in the charger. But going to look for a used one once it is in. :thumbup

Love the car. Don't have, want, or really trust their "full self driving" software, which isn't really full self driving. I also don't believe Musk's comparison of cameras to eyes is at all scientifically supported.

How the hell did you fit into a model 3?! That car feels tiny to me.

It wasn’t bad at all. Plenty of room for my shoulders and I didn’t even need to put the seat all the way back. Also the glass roof leaves plenty of room for my head.

Ford Model e, Ford's EV division, lost $722 M EBIT for the quarter.

That is a negative 100% EBIT margin.

In order for EV to be successful, legacy auto like Ford and GM will have to catch up.

I've got a few months to think about it. Definitely not going to buy an electric car until I have the solar installed and a vehicle charger to go with it.

Rivian announced they'll be using Tesla superchargers moving forward, and swapping the built in plugs for models coming in 2025 (maybe it was '26?) and later.

Other manufacturers switching to Tesla chargers can’t be a bad thing for Tesla stock.

It does seem like Tesla has won the VHS vs BetaMax debate as far as car charging is concerned.

They’re the only one with a reliable national charging network that enables coast to coast driving. Hard earned.

Yea, I could easily see a scenario develop where Tesla's primary business is their charging network, with the car company part becoming a vestigial hanger-on beaten down by the abject failure that is their self driving tech, continual quality control problems, and failure to update their lineup. For all of the dumb shit that Musk does, I don't hear much complaint about their charging network.

Musk has said that the grid energy storage business could be bigger than the auto business.

If you think Tesla doing bad, then don't look at Ford and GM.

Texas power grid is under major strain during a bad heat wave and Tesla Powerwalls (home battery) are selling energy back to the grid at $5 per kWh.:wow

Many people who know the car business, including myself have had the same impression of Tesla for quite some time. And that is simply “great tech company, but a bad car company.”

I know all of you that have a Tesla are perfectly happy with it and all that. But as someone who knows the car business pretty well, I am appalled at how long Tesla has gotten away with continuing to make the same thing year after year. But, but…the Model 3 is getting some redesigned bumpers and headlights next year. Ooooooo. Big friggin deal. Other manufacturers call this a mid model refresh. And it doesn’t take them 7 years to do it. Anything that’s actually new from Tesla? What the Cybertruck? It’s been 3+ years of vaporware and broken promises so far. I don’t see that truck coming to production in any way resembling what they showed in 2019.

So what a catalog that’s getting pretty stale, and all the real car companies now rolling out lots of much better made and more inspiring vehicles in the coming year or two? Yeah it’s great for Tesla that they invested a lot in setting up this giant charging network. Because now they can just collect money off other brand vehicles. If Tesla can negotiate partnerships with all the rest of the automakers, they can just quit the car business completely and focus more on electric charging/storage solutions for the ever expanding infrastructure. I think the expression that fits well here is, you don’t make money selling razors, you make it off the razor blades.
