Online, with just lic plate?

And as non-op, because I think I need to certify something like the vehicle will not be operated.

The reg is suspended due to no insurance and suspended license. Two cars, one already past due end of Nov, so last day to reg PNO is apparently in the next week or so, and the other will expire in Jan.

It's for my elderly cousin, who has lost his ability to fully care for himself now and is likely to go into an assisted living center for a while.

I register vehicles not in my name on DMV's website several times a year. All you need is the plate # and the last 5 digits of the vin. I'm glad your cousin has someone like you in his corner. We just went through a few years of taking care of my father-in-law. It is soooo much easier to get things done when power of attorney, trusts, etc. are taken care of in advance, although it was still a very difficult journey.

EDIT: The suspended license and insurance may be a problem. I must've skipped over that part. I wish you the best of luck.

many years ago i was even lazier than i am now, and didn't want to go get a smog check but paid the DMV anyway. the effect was that while my registration lapsed, it didn't really expire to trigger increasing fees while i just needed the SMOG. I think it's an "incomplete registration" or something like that. I wonder if lack of insurance would be similar? Suspended license doesn't prevent someone from owning a car, only driving it so that too ought not prevent paying/non-op of the vehicle.

best bet is to call DMV Sacramento
1-800-777-0133

you can get in a virtual line they'll call you back when it's your turn but you HAVE TO ANSWER THE PHONE because you only get one call back. if you miss it, call back an get in the end of the line.

Lack of insurance gets you a suspended registration. You cannot non-op a vehicle on a suspended registration without clearing it first.
In order to clear the registration you MUST have a minimum policty in place, then pay the $14 get the registration cleared for renewal and then put it on a non-op. If the registration is past due you have to place insurance on the vehicle and pay the full registration. Then you have to submit a form (link is in my Unfixable fix it ticket thread) make certain that form has gone through, kill the insurance, mark your calender for 90 days prior to registration renewal and non-op that sucker.

Convaluted and effed up? You betcha Margie! :mad

At one point in my life I could set up an nth order differential equation. I did not need to call my professor.

Can I sick APS on the state DMV? Please say yes, even if it's a lie...

Go to DMV in person, bring all paperwork you have available, be nice plead ignorance , tell the whole dad story, ask if a supervisor can step in be prepared for the worst ($$$$) be humbled and grateful for any generosity experienced.

I'm not sure how it would go at DMV. The cars are not mine and I cannot demonstrate any relation to the owner. I also have no paperwork.

I don't think we can get the insurance reinstated because there is no licensed driver. Not sure. I'll try the online registration process first once I get the lics and vins

Thanks.

Got it!

PM in bound later today.

"Can I pay someone else's car registration?"

Yes. I have paid the DMV registration on the wife’s (maiden name) truck at both DMV and AAA, the only deviance is they won’t hand me the tag. They mail it to the address that’s on the registration.

.

math follows rules and sometimes makes sense. government agencies do not. call the professor

affadavid of non-use might get you around the insurance problem but probably also have to have registration current to file it, dunno

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/affidavit-of-non-use/

as far as buying the vehicles, the easiest way would be to find the actual titles and have your cousin sign them over. if those aren't available, do the "application for missing title" form
