Hi all!

I pulled the trigger last July and put a deposit on one of the mythical Kip Moto SherpaX trailers. It finally arrived about a week ago. Not sure where my head was at then or since, but I didn't even think about the whole registration (and insurance?) thing.

I've messaged CA DMV and Caltrans (on FB), and in the meantime, my Google Fu has been horribly inadequate.

Can anyone help knock this out of "Snipe Hunt" status and point me in a helpful direction?

TIA

Thanks John.

Not sure what the "PTI IDENTIFICATION PLATE NUMBER" is, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a VIN. There is a "Unit #" on the paperwork, but I haven't opened it up to see if it's stamped on the trailer. From this FAQ on Kip Moto, it doesn't sound like it, but I'll have to open the box and see: "Yes. We supply a Unit # with each trailer allowing you the ability to insure your trailer. Keep in mind that you should check with your local authority on licensing a trailer. You may need additional hardware to ensure you can properly insure your trailer."

I printed out that form. I'll crack the box open this weekend and then start planning to spend my after work hours at the DMV and see what happens.

In the box should be a Manufacturer's Certification of Origin. That's the document you need- it should have a VIN or serial number printed on it that matches the one on the vehicle.

The PTI is the Permanent Trailer Identification- e.g. the plate the state will issue for the trailer. To obtain one, you have to submit the MSO and a Reg 343 to the DMV.

There will be a registration fee and you may have to have the trailer inspected at the DMV office. That's all that's required.

Complete a Reg 4017 form if you want a paper title for the trailer (makes selling it easier/more straightforward.) It's not required to have but I prefer paper titles for all of my vehicles.

Thank you, cheez!

DMV also got back to me via FB with some of the same info you have here, so I'm on it!

I'll post up my results when they happen.

Thanks everyone!
