2022 - 20 years of barfing review! (+23)

2021

2021

When you have a forum that has lasted for 20 years you feel some of the real life pain.
We lost one of our most important and historical members DataDan and a fond one for many..Marci. I lost one of my best friends too. Godspeed Wob.
For some of us our hearts are still broken for fellow member R3DS!X when he posted about his Dad being missing
Love ya man.. hang in.

We have seen things get better this year, but still face challenges thanks to the Virus.
A bunch of us started the year by following Dakar and Ricky Brabec brought home the chrome with a runner up spot. After his win in 2020 the man is rocking! :flag
The 2022 Thread is up and I will no doubt be following along!

We said goodbye to Racing Legend Dick Mann. His legacy lives on in the AMA HOF and in the classic movie On Any Sunday. And just after Christmas Earl Hayden passed away. The Monarch of the Hayden Family celebrated the moto life.

Some shared some riding:
SFMCjohn, Lowerside,jroberts247, norcalkid and NoneMoreBlack said fug it and ride!

There has been a little adventure too:
greenhornet, stratslingr77 and 1962siia

And what better way to beat the pandemic, by playing dirty:
StoneyBARF 13 and StoneyBARF 14

We got a couple of Rallies in! :ride
Hoho Mid Summer Magic and Rydther Rallies.

Racing is still in many of our hearts and I read the race reports always.
GoGo always delivers and threw down another classic to enjoy Chasing the Front.
Check the AFM for others and give them a well done!

Moto Activism has been a big part of our history. Thanks as always to Cycle Gear for supporting it!

We continue to battle for the right to ride and to ride what we want.
Red Sticker is one on bikes and the fight to keep Pismo Beach open is still on my radar.

Enchanter joined me on the SHSP Motorcycle Safety Committee is getting his toes wet in the world of Goverment.
AMA and I have two actions moving forward at this time.
1. Add lanesplitting information and awareness to the DMV Handbook.
2. Add CHP awareness media reach out for the same.
A third to require a link to a phone APP to autonomous vehicles for those that wish to be recognized. moto / bicycle / pedestrian. That got shot down, but there is some legislative actions that are trending towards something. Long time away I fear, but I reconize that it is the wild west out there right now and not much data is required to be provided to the State Office of Traffic Safety in terms of near misses or issues.

On the CMSP Committee side I have two actions that are still in the game.
1. Ongoing Online training tool for all moto riders.
2. Additional funding for the media reach outs that would be year long vs just May.

More fun stuff:
I handed out some thanks in the form of BARFies. Here is a full list of winners over the years:

We saw a bounce on a thread from 2005. That happens once in a while and it shows how BARF has changed.
The Men: How to please a woman, orally. shows what we were and also how we have changed with the world. It is proved by this quote :laughing
This thread is from back when there were no women on the internet.

Formula 1 fans still discuss the premier racing series in the world here too as they have for a while. Quite the season.

Historic Threads: These are some of the most viewed on barf. Some are in the specific year post, but I added some here. A diverse range of topics that shows the community in the community.

In the beginning of the year I represented BARF Thanks to you....! NHTSA Summit - Insight into safety on the roadways. The applause from others at the Summit and thumbs up from the AMA and Total Control felt good.

We asked for your support. AB 51 - Time to support it!!. It was controversial in way for us as many felt we did not need no stinking law. In the end we had a victory dance at the DNA Lounge AB 51 Celebration Oct. 8th 1-4pm. Even Assemblymember Quirk at a beer with us! Good memories of working with Surj and Nick Haris from the AMA on the bill. Others as well.

2020
Sometimes it is topical for just a year. Johndicezx9 threw this down 2021 New Bikes and Updates and 13K views shows we like bikes.

More:

BARF member Disco did some awesome moto paintings. I bought a few. Well more than a few. They adorn my office. Love his work.
He still offers prints of some including the commission piece of Nicky Hayden we made for the Hayden Foundation Fundraiser. This year I had three personal paintings commissioned of my racing days one. A future legacy gift for the 3 kids that went and watched Dad do his thing. The one from 1989 in Portland is below.

Given the down time I took a moment to share Rally memories in my phone. I keep many there so I can relive the awesome moments whenever I need to turn a bummer day into a good one.

In the end we have some planning to do for the Rallies and for me personally a long ride inspired by this documentary.
We do need some new Rally Master Blood to join TWT, Chill and I. Mostly fill in for me..:laughing
As noted I am planning a big personal ride and doing Hawthorne will be a challenge for me.

Tech (the BARF Sucks).
We should get with the program.. we found some tech crapola at the end of 2021, barf slow, double posts, etc. :facepalmWe are close to the Software change thanks to Insyder, but have had help save us from issues by Valgar and Ceric too. We started the upgrade a while ago. Beta testing has been done and a server upgrade being sought to make sure we don't lose a minute of our history. If this was a business it would have been done a year ago. Since it is a passion and I am far from a geek... it has been a frustrating journey. I hope to see some patience when we flip the switch.

As always.. thank you for sharing your life with us.

Another year ahead.

Still dealing with the Covid. Still trying to get back to normal.
SFMCjohn has already done a sunrise ride! Jan 1, 2002. Some normal already!

We have said thanks to some forum specific mod's.
Bassem, FirstBuell and Manimal guided some forums, but we decided we have things under control and actually BARF is requiring less moderation than ever before. All are moved to Mod Alumni status and all below are deserving of thanks for their effort as are all that have provide effort over the two decades of BARF LIFE.

Here is the full list of people that have touched the command center :p

Moderator Alumni:
Afm199, Bassem Bootsykay, Brash47, bsd43, cardinal03, Carlo, carries an axe, CrazyGenius, Cyclesuzy, DanZX9R, Data Dan, dedge, Deeter, DocWong, Dougmo, elskpador, engineboy, faz, firstbuell, flying_hun, hawkgirl, HiggyB, Hoho, Honey Badger, Instance, JackTheTripper, JadedOne, JMack, JoeBar, Kim, KXP, Likely2BAirborn, machete, MackeyStingray, Manimal, Max Smiley, mlm, Mortifer, MotoLiam, motorman4life, MrCrash, mrtnz, Nemo Brinker, nexus, ninja_ryder, nitro9292002, NoGall, OzyMandias, pashnit, Port4mance, R roku, RcrBoy, Rel, RichieB, rsai, RZ331, sckego, silversvs, Spec-Ecu, superhawk, Surj, SVsick50, Tharkun, theSteveCo, TSC girl, twowheeltramp, V4, veeferreefer, wackyiraqi, weak_link, weasel, wei7, Yanabana, YellowDuc and Zerox.

Current Mods:
auntiebling, bikeama, bojangle, Butch, Chill, Holeshot, KazMan, Map8, planegray, SFMCjohn,

Admins:
DucatiHoney, Enchanter, tzrider

Tech Admins:
Insyder, Valgar

Covid Volunteer Mods:
Dr_SLO and Snaggy

Moderating is not for everyone. We saw some jump in and quickly say screw this. :later
Some are ID's that I don't even know and can't remember them posting. Likely the first year crew. Some jumped in to help fix barf way back like nexus. Thanks Tom.

Some helped for over a decade and did wonderful things for us and helped as Admins, Rally leaders, social leaders, etc. Special spots in my heart for many shall remain. :applause

So what it expected moving forward?
1. I hope that the vets here stop berating newbies for asking a question about a subject that has been brought up before. Some of you really are crushing the new members with that shit. Cool your jets and either answer the question or STFU. :teeth
BARF has matured.. and we want to engage younger riders because in reality our wisdom can help them with their journey and help them be smarter and safer riders. This sport is NOT safe, but with good choices and some solid expectations for the ride more can avoid the dangers and become life long OG riders! :afm199

Maybe they can drag us out to be more social too. :party

2. More rallies! :ride

3. Same old community :bs in the sink! :thumbup

4. God.. new software.. Please.. When it happens expect some WTF's and some shake out but now it the time for changes. VBulletin will be gone and Xenforo will be the new deal. Teh BARF will look a bit different we are still the same people with same love of Moto's. Hopefully I will never have to see another post about pictures being difficult to upload and we will start to rock those... man I want that!

5. BARF will continue to lead in the Safety field in terms of State actions and the legislative world that affects us.

6. BARF will continue to fight for our right to get dirty and enjoy one hell of a cool family sport that is not for everyone, but one that everyone should have the right to pursue.

7. BARF will continue to share life that is not all moto all the time. The Kitchen Sink is so much a part of who we are and hopefully will show who we are as some have described as a "weird and diverse family brought together by the love of two wheels".

8. Forum adjustments to better your experience here. We will shuffle the order of the Forums, combine a couple and give the AFM the real props they deserve too.

9. Continued support for the AFM. What started in 1954 deserves my love and since I run this joint the AFM shall remain a priority for me. Hopefully more will take up the torch and find the racing life is still awesome. As awesome it was for me 3 decades ago.
Holeshot and Kazman remain solid AFM dudes and BARF Mod's too.

10. Barf will continue to be a vibrant community that has remained free of invasive advertising, still privately owned doing what is best for the people that come visit and at times our fellow community members and people we do not even know.

Happy New Year! :party

The step into the year of 2022 is still a little weird, but hey, next year BARF will be 21. That could be CRAZY!!!

Whatever happened to silly sod?

He passed in 2011. :rose

Fuck I forgot. I remember hearing that now.

Great wrap up of Barf history! Thanks for putting this all together, and ya know, keeping the barf thing going.

Amazing write-up! Thanks for putting that together.

Happy 2022!!

This was really awesome. I've had my years of being active and inactive. I will dig up old posts from way back and it's like my own personal history and ups and downs - many not even motorcycle related. A lot of it is so cringy! Heck, I even married, and divorced, a BARF'er.

I'll tell you what is not cringy, though. The amazing information, rides, friends, and most of all, experiences all because of this platform. I recall pulling up to places and people being, like "Hey man, you're SVsick50!" :laughing

Here is one from 2005 - the first SMHooligans trackday. I couldn't have done this without BARF.

Then in 2007 we gathered a bunch of crazies on Dual Sports and did an insane heat-to-snow ride through New Indria - I feel like 20-30 people showed up for that ride.

There have been countless awesome experiences I've had all pointing to BARF.

BARF oddly has been my main source of connection with the motorcycle community. I don't even live in the Bay Area, but it's still my go-to place. Thanks for the memories, peeps. I can't believe I've been on here for that long haha.

Hoping you silent folk are enjoying the history download.
Needless to say, I put a lot of effort into this to chronicle our history.

Sharing your tidbits on what I missed is SO WELCOMED!!!

We have history!!!

I think I was member #6, not sure. My biggest regret was that I was a workaholic. From the time barf started Till I retired at 55, I've had 2 jobs, sometimes two full time jobs. It was nice to retire young, but in so doing I lost precious barf time. I barely had time for a barf ride or even attend a mod meeting. I was lucky enough to keep my trackday love active but it was tough. Steve if you read this , thank you for starting barf, and Denny thank you for taking the helm and making barf what it has become. I love the Barf and I love you man:staRang:love

I feel ya on work. I am still plugging in way to much time and I can only imagine the work I could do here if I did not have that duty.

Love you to Art. :thumbup

Racer mentality, the older I get the closer I get to being the #1 member:rofl

Great write up BudMan, thanks for taking the time to do it.
Saw a pic of me back 2006, holy guacamole Budman, I used to be quite the svelte buoyant water fowl, but back in the day all of us had noses that stuck out further than our guts.
Looking forward to 2022 and life in Barfistan.

You clearly put a lot of work into assembling that detailed and entertaining timeline for us, Dennis.
Just add that to the long list of things I appreciate you doing for the local riding community and the sport at large.
On behalf of those of us addicted to the art and science of controlling a motorcycle thank you for providing us a place to congregate, learn and socialize. Sign me up for the next 20 years. :ride

Whew! That was a long read. But I bet not even a smidge of how long it took to write. Links, pictures,
The whole nine. Fantastic undertaking there Bud. Much appreciated!

Old Race Photos
As race fans this thread hit us in the stomach. For those that were not race fans it probably raised an eyebrow. No doubt barf has inspired a few riders to go see some racing or actually RACE themselves.!

I am honored to be included in the "Best of BARF" pantheon! Thank you!

Outside of friends that I could show actual prints of my old race photos I had never really shown them to too many people. BARF certainly changed that... :laughing

The responses I received were very kind and encouraging, so I kept scanning more and posting. I am particularly proud of the Roberts and Mamola wheelie pics (owed to luck more so than any camera skills), and many of the pics of the riders in the paddock, whether Bruce Hammer in his racer days, the late great Wes Cooley sipping on a cup of coffee on a foggy morning, or Colin Edwards adjusting his... ummm... Castrol leathers.

I tried to use my 35mm Nikon not too long ago, at the Velocity Event, and the pics were terrible. :facepalm iPhone photography mostly now... :laughing

Thank you Budman, for BARF, and for all you do for the riding community!:thumbup
