(Some) MotoAmerica classes kick-off their season this weekend with racing during Bike Week featuring the new look Supersport class for the Daytona 200. Other classes taking to the high banks of Daytona International Speedway are Twins Cup, King of the Baggers and Roland Sands Super Hooligans.

The change in format to allow a bigger variety of bikes sparked some big name racer entries and serious efforts from Japanese and European manufacturers.

ENTRY LIST for all races.

The only way to watch live (or OnDemand) is the MotoAmericaLive+ streaming package.

The entries are pretty solid.

The Bagger class should be entertaining. Bobby on and Indian. :cool

Jeremy McWilliams on a bagger! Will more MotoGP riders crossover? Might Bobby Bettencourt in Twins Cup be John Bettencourt’s son?

So, is the 200 just the supersports, or is it a mixed class race?

Yea, that twins field is huge.

The Bagger field is nothing to sneeze at either.

Might Bobby Bettencourt in Twins Cup be John Bettencourt’s son?

:thumbup

did I ever tell you that Mr John Bettencourt gave us a talk at our New Racer School at Bryar Motorsport Park in 1987, making him a big part of my foundational club racing experience? alway a huge fan of his, be super-cool if Mr Bobby is related. :gsxrgrl

Good pull.. :thumbup

Where's the video!!! That was pretty classic. :laughing

be fun to find the vid, I’ll look for it ... :laughing

I raced on a club racing endurance team at Daytona in 1988 that Mr Fania, Jr’s, father put together, guess he was in middle school at the time. He’s from New Jersey, we were all from New Jersey, it was awesome. :toothless

The 200 has been a 600 supersport race for many years. Its been mostly Yamaha R6 with the some Suzukis, Kawasakis and the occasional Triumph 675 Daytona. One of Eslick's wins was on a Triumph. No one can (or at least wants to) build a tire that will hold together for Superbikes doing many laps at Daytona.

The MotoAmerica Supersport and World Supersport rules changed this year to allow the Ducati 959 Panigale V-Twin, Triumphs, MV Agusta Triples and I think GSXR750 in addition to the 600s. There is some performance indexing to level the playing field. We'll see how well it works. BSB introduced a similar format last year but I don't follow that series so I don't know how it turned out.

The 200 is always an exciting race to watch.

speaking of Daytona 200 excitement:

ancient history from the 2004 Daytona 200 ...

for those of us following along at home, the superbike era at Daytona began in 1985 and ran to 2004, which was the last year for superbikes.

2005 was the first year for the 600cc formula extreme bikes.

MotoAmerica will feature its Supersport class in the 80th running of the Daytona 200 using the FIM’s “Supersport New Generation” rules, which will see the class made up of everything from Yamaha’s YZF-R6 to Ducati’s Panigale V2 to Triumph’s Speed Triple RS and everything in between.

Mercy Steve... Daytona doesn't need a tire to go the whole distance when you factor in pit stops... Superbikes and pit stops was double the excitement for viewers... Supersports don't bring the same level of excitement... they are boring on the banks...

I didn't say the full distance. Dunlop can't build a tire that lasts between pit stops. Yates and Spies both had horrific crashes in testing due to tires coming apart on the banking at top speed. Spies had months of painful recovery.

I don't find the supersports boring. The last several years have had edge-of-your-seat finishes. Much better than seeing racers sliding down the down the pavement at 180mph.

last year was epic ... would say it's really all about the draft:

tl/dr: tune in at 10:40 to see the last lap. heartbreak for Mr Kelly, who we're enjoying in Moto2 this season ...

Super stoked for the 200 this weekend, sadly the weather forecast looks like :jaded.

Wet and windy. The 200 may be postponed until Sunday. Hope they can get practice, qualifying, and the other races in between showers.

For Wayback Wednesday, lemme tell ya about the time they asked me to ride Aaron Yates Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R 750 Superbike!

Daytona March 2000, after we put our rider Lee Acree on the 750 Supersport podium (P3 behind John Hopkins and Jimmy Moore), we gave the Yosh boys a hand with their pit stop practice for the 200. Yes that is Mr Itoh, the Big Boss from Japan pushing me. They pushed me into the garage over and over, where the bike went up on stands, wheels got swapped, dump can went in the tank. My main contribution was confirming I could reach the camelbak that was attached to the dump can to get a drink. Mladin won, Yates got 5th
