• ZERO- WHERE DID MY AD GO?
    • It has likely been deleted for running egregiously afoul of the rules below. Feel Free to try again

1- DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SELL THE FOLLOWING ON BARF:
    • animals, though free re-homing is ok.
    • anything illegal.
    • drugs, legal or not.

2- Sellers, for best results... please read and follow these instructions:

    • Asking price [MANDATORY] in the BODY ONLY. DO NOT PUT PRICE IN THE TITLE
      • motorcycle or other vehicle:
        - make [MANDATORY]
        - model [MANDATORY]
        - year [MANDATORY]
        - Pictures [FIRST THING THAT WILL BE ASKED FOR IF YOU DON'T, BUT NOT MANDATORY]
        - mileage
        - title info
        - current condition
        - maintenance history
        - accident history
        - location
      • If selling riding gear, include:
        - size in the title of the thread. [MANDATORY]
        - in your post, include: intended gender/body weight/height/inseam/waist range that best fits the item.

    • Do not include the price in the title. You won't be able to edit it later. Put the price in the body of your post.
    • DO NOT INCLUDE LINKS TO 3RD PARTY SALES SITES Copy/paste your ad to BARF and make sure it includes the info above.
    • Edit your original post and change the price there... many buyers will not look beyond that point if you change the price later on further into the thread. Also, remember to add SOLD to first line of the first post when the item has been sold.
    • Please use the "Report this post to a moderator" (
      report.gif
) option at the lower left portion of the post if item is sold or to report erroneous posts or threads, and it will be taken care of.
    • With any indication that an item is sold, the thread will be locked by moderators. It is not fair to other valid ads to be pushed down the list when side discussions bump a sold ad to the top of the list. Moderators will do their best in changing the title and adding a 'sold' to the beginning of the title to save a few clicks for others.

    3- Buyers, BEWARE!!!

    • Pricing - Know the current market value of the bike. Check Kelly Blue book, NADA, CycleTrader, Ebay, Craigslist (even though some people on Craigslist are asking non-realistically high prices and will never be able to sell the bike at their asking price), and know what the current market value of a similar bike is before considering a purchase. Consider the maintenance work or fixes that YOU need to do to the bike, and factor that into the price. It is ok to pay more for a bike that has had all of the maintenance work done to it recently, or pay less and get a bike that needs some work, but you must know this in advance and be ok with it.
    • Inspecting the bike: if you are not experienced yourself, have a mechanic or an experienced friend check the bike before making a purchase. Crashed bikes:This is even more important if you are buying a bike that is being sold at a cheaper price with damages that the buyer is required to fix. In these cases, doing a frame check that will show any frame/fork/geometry damages is HIGHLY recommended. Do NOT simply rely on the information that the seller is providing, even he/she may not be aware of all the problems. Have the crashed bike checked and know what you are getting into.
    • Clean title, Salvage title A clean title doesn't mean the bike is free of serious issues. A Salvaged title doesn't mean the bike may have any problems. Every case is different. Some bikes are seriously damaged in a crash, but an insurance claim is never made on them, so they still have a clean title. Some bikes have had mostly cosmetic damages in a crash, but the insurance company decided to pay off the bike and salvage the title rather than spending the money to fix it. Know what you are getting into and don't make any assumptions based on what the seller is telling you.
    • Registration: Know about the current registration status of the bike. Check with DMV if you have any questions about any possible back fees and other title/registration questions (out of state title, no title with bill of sales only, etc.) before purchasing the bike.
    • Some additional tips: You can find some more useful info here: http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=216958

4- DO NOT make your opinion known in the seller's ad

    • Comments within a sale thread should be on topic and educational. Aggressive critiques and inside jokes will not be tolerated. Constructive dialogue is a valuable feature of the barf classifieds section and community as a whole. Flame wars and unsubstantiated accusations help neither seller or buyer. Don't fuck it up, because the next step is disabling the "reply" feature entirely.
    • If you disagree with a price, keep it to yourself. The seller has set the price. If you don't like it, don't buy it and move on. If you really feel strongly about it, then PM the seller.
    • If you are interested in an item, feel free to PM, email or contact the seller privately. Feel free to post if you need clarification... however, your post should be in line with above mentioned rules.
    • If you are aware of a serious issue with an ad (SPAM, stolen goods, a frame damaged bike being advertised as a 'never crashed' bike, etc.) please PM a moderator about it.

5- DO NOT SPAM the classifieds section on BARF

    • Spamming entails using only the classifieds sections of BARF without taking part in other sections of BARF (regardless of whether the ad is for a personal item or a business.) The appeal of BARF classifieds is to enable and connect BARFers with some established history on BARF to one another.

BARF isn't craigslist, ebay, cycletrader, etc. Buyers who are looking to buy from random strangers do so on one of the above mentioned sites. Those who only post in Classifieds sections and don't take part in other parts of BARF are no different than any other random sellers on Craigslist, etc., and should use channels other than BARF to try and sell their items.
    • If you're affiliated with a store/shop, please contact budman regarding sponsorship options. ALL non-sponsor commercial posts will be deleted. Site sponsors should post using only one account that is assigned a BARF SPONSOR tag.
    • We encourage the use of the classifieds by active contributing members. New members may post in the Classifieds forum after establishing minimal history on BARF (15 days and 15 posts). If you actively attempt to circumvent these minimum requirements only to post in classifieds, your account may be suspended. After reaching these minimums, posting only in the classifieds without taking part in other sections of BARF may result in being banned from BARF.

6- DO NOT repost funny/strange/not-related-to-you ads from Craigslist or elsewhere on BARF or anywhere else for that matter.
    • No reposting
    • No reposting
    • No reposting. If what you're about to post isn't for sale BY YOU, don't post it.

    7- SELLING FOR A FRIEND:
    • Is not allowed.

    8- Feeler, Testing Waters etc:
    • Is no longer allowed.

      • If you are unsure of the fair price of your item, use the search function to research other similar items, ebay, craigslist, nadaguides, kelly blue book or whatever else is applicable. The classifieds section is not a discussion forum, thus not the place to be asking for opinions on market value that might lead to massive gray areas of conversation that violate preceding rules outlined above.
  • There has been a recent cluster of spammers accessing BARFer accounts and posting spam. To safeguard your account, please consider changing your password. It would be even better to take the additional step of enabling 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) on your BARF account. Read more here.

Good morning BARF. My goal for 2024 is getting into more dirt, and that happens to coincide with hopefully an expansion in my available garage space soon.

For use case, if the stars align I'd be starting off using this bike for things like StonyBarf, Sheetiron, and eventually BDRs. So a plated dual sport.

Based on my extremely modest amount of experience in the dirt, I am looking for something that is more dirt oriented than street, I think in the 300 class.

So let's see what's crowding up space in the collective BARF garage!

I have a KLX 250, with a 300 cylinder & piston (oem), that I’ve been thinking to sell. (Bought a newer KLX 300)
It need a good cleaning, but is set up for Sheetiron type rides and such. Has the usual protection bits, and a rack on the back.
Happy to chat more, if this sounds interesting.

And if not, let’s at least chat about your SRX 6.
I have one as well, we should get a ride in. And I have a friend with a few as well. Maybe he can join.

I’ve been thinking of a Kawasaki Versys-X 300 for my new Sheetiron, StonyBARF, BDR, Death Valley, Baja and adventure-style BARF rally bike:

people seem to enjoy the Yamaha WR 250R for the kind of CA fire road/watch-tower-touring/camping that I like to do …

are you thinking about riding from the city, or trailer/trucking somewhere and unloading the bike and then riding? :ride

Hell yeah, are you in the SRX FB group?

Honda CRF300 Rally seems like a good bet for your criteria.

I've been landing back on this over and over. They're the same price new as a lot of used D/S bikes I'm seeing, and if it's good enough for Itchy Boots...

What do I look like to you, some kind of quitter? ;P

I'd definitely want to stick with the D/S nature of the ride (both the Sheetiron and my future visions) and stay on two wheels the whole way. So while I'm a dirt noob, I think I want to balance the notion that this bike needs to be halfway useful on the highway, hence my looking into the 300-450 class, knowing that in the dirt I'll be happier/safer on a 250.

+1 for the impressive WR250R, fantastic bike with solid dirt leaning with cruzing at 70 perfectly fine.

BARF's own Mr. @Cabrito has been rocking a 300 Rally for a couple years now. I think he's pretty happy with his. Maybe he'll weigh in here.

This looks like a solid choice and potentially economical, and if you find you don't like this type of riding you might not have a big financial hit.

Honda CRF300 Rally seems like a good bet for your criteria.
I sure like mine, but not sure this is the best choice if you end up dropping it a lot while learning unless you slap on a bunch of protection like crash bars. The Plastics can get pretty beat up, but if you're okay with the rough and ready look then it's a good choice in my biased opinion :teeth. It's OK on the highway, but barely halfway useful at speeds above 65mph.

:thumbup Kawasaki for life! The Versys 300 will be great on those long freeway stretches, but how much fun will it be chugging up Mt Patterson?

What do I look like to you, some kind of quitter? ;P

Don't judge me guys for putting my Rally on my hauler and driving to big rides. :) Could I ride my Rally up to Stonyford to ride the SI? Sure I could, but I have no shame and since I can haul it places I occasionally do. :x

For me true dual sports just aren't well suited to mile munching at freeway speeds.

I do love my Rally and it's great for long rides, but it prefers the secondary roads over the big interstate for sure.

I do the same sometimes.
To the Carizzo Plain - Yes, ride it. There's a fun route.
To Stonyford - in the truck

yes, it's just too bad about the whole having-to-settle-for-a-Honda thing. :toothless

What do I look like to you, some kind of quitter? ;P

:laughing:thumbup

attaboy! the trade off that I've made with riding a bike out of the city to the good stuff, is I don't do Sheetiron hard-splits, and I don't try to do single-track on my 400lb ADV street-bike.

the CRF 300 Rally might be hard-split and single-track worthy.

+1 for the impressive WR250R, fantastic bike with solid dirt leaning with cruzing at 70 perfectly fine.

+1, another hard-split worthy option, maybe.

:thumbup Kawasaki for life! The Versys 300 will be great on those long freeway stretches, but how much fun will it be chugging up Mt Patterson?

god bless Kawasaki. will say that Mt Patterson is def way no fun on a pre-gen KLR, loaded for camping. :facepalm:clown

The wind was blowing ... the moon was up and almost full ...

sorta feelin' like my Mt Patterson daze are behind me ... :dunno

I do the same sometimes.

To Stonyford - in the truck

there's a great dual-sport route from San Francisco to Stonyford via Lake Berryessa, Reiff/Rayhose Road, to Walker Ridge/Bear Valley. Or Pleasant Valley to Capay to Leesville to Stonyford. :ride

in any event, my vote for Mr NoneMoreBlack is the Honda CRF300 Rally. :gsxrgrl

NMB, Is seat height a consideration for you?

32" + inseam you can ride.about anything, less and it can get interesting on a lot of bikes..

<--- From a guy who started riding to StonyBARF's on a KTM 640 Adventure:

You really want 2 bikes, a cheap 2 stroke you can beat the crap out of (YZ250 fans please chime in) at Hollister, Metcalf, Carnegie, Stonyford, Foresthill, Georgetown. Learn all the fun tricks of balancing in the dirt / mud / sand [take a few offroad lessons if you want] as it much easier to lift a 200lbs bike then a 400+lb one.....
Then for your sheetirons or BDR's you can get anything from the 300's already mentioned to a 350 Austrian bike to a DR650 etc....

A heavy bike will tire you quicker, meaning you will have less riding hours to practice all those fun skills, lifting it sucks [hows your back?] dropping it is expensive [unless you put a bunch of armor on it making it heavier & 'more fun to pick up'.... see the trend here?] blah blah, I could probably go on for hours.

If you want 1 bike which will do it all well and don't mind spending some $$ a KTM / Husky / GasGas 350 is hard to beat (its almost as good as that 2001 YZ250 just ask OaklandF4i).

If you want to test ride a 500 4T or a 300 2T at Hollister or something let me know.

EDIT
And for your long term enjoyment, set the suspension sag on whatever you get with proper springs etc...

Haha, the classic answer to the "which bike" question: 2 bikes! How dare you threaten me with a good time =P

All good here, I am spindly and can just about flat foot my HM1100, which is like 35" or something

yes, it's just too bad about the whole having-to-settle-for-a-Honda thing. :toothless

To the extent that I know anything about riding dirt, it's that I'll be sticking to the easy splits, no matter what bike I land on :laughing

And yeah the "settling for a Honda" sensation has me looking maybe a little too seriously at 500EXCs on craigslist.....

I am on the SRX FB group. Got to ride with Mr Ichijo & friends last fall, around the North Bay. 4 of us on SRX's. Such a treat.

I was there! And as a bonus I am now friends with Den and their crew and they took us riding in Japan a couple years ago!!
Lywmzbuh.jpg

Ichijo-san was hustling that V-Max (as well he should considering he designed the damn thing) and Den lent me his GSXR1k. Set up for a rider about 12" shorter than me. On slicks. In the rain. First time riding on the wrong side of the road. With my wife on the back. In ill fitting loaner gear. It was a fun time!

Don't judge me guys for putting my Rally on my hauler and driving to big rides. :) Could I ride my Rally up to Stonyford to ride the SI? Sure I could, but I have no shame and since I can haul it places I occasionally do. :x

Haha truly no shade thrown, I am well aware of my own masochism when it comes to the "why don't I just ride there" calculus.

pro-tip for we aspiring n00bie dirt riders--beware of the advice from KTM riders/dirt bike racers. their advice is often excellent, but tends not to really be directed towards the uninitiated. :laughing:angel

another question--besides the inseam question--is how comfortable are you with wrenching?

Ah good memories John, thank you for posting that!
You should see our van driving... :rofl:laughing

there we go ... now we're truly getting somewhere in this thread: as a n00bie dirt-bike aspirant, what van should I purchase to cart my various dirt-bikes around in?

perhaps Mr Cabrito will chime in about vans, too ... :laughing:angel

hope to see all our various four wheel haulers at StonyBARF in April! :party

Very, although I'm not particularly excited about the Requires Frequent Top End Rebuilds flavor, also hence my focus on D/S oriented models since as far as I can tell they are detuned a bit for longevity.

Aside from lacking a 6th gear or fuel injection or highway manners, the DRZ is a sweet starter. Pretty bomb proof, light-ish and capable-ish in the dirt and if you avoid highways it's fine, even in my case with a bigger rear sprocket to make it more fun on dirt. I've ridden the thing all the way to Oregon, done the OBDR and then ridden it back home. It was fun and it'll feel like a race bike compared to your Hyper on the dirt.

I rode Hondas CRF 300L in Costa Rica and I was suitably impressed, with a tune and upgrades to the suspension I could be very happy with bike, though I'm not sure what climbs at elevation with my heavy butt on it would feel like, it was certainly not fast up hills with my and a 55lb back pack but did everything I asked it to do and probably could have done it faster / smoother in a more capable riders hands.
