CHP to pay $10m to Salinas family

I think you got it wrong. The weakass Jury kneeled to a 10M payout. Considering the CHP attorney offered zip how da hell do you think they were p****y's? Maybe they sucked to some point I suppose, but I think it is the Jury that failed here.

The article sucks "Man shot 45 times" and then says Cho missed all of her 16 rounds. The other dude shot 28 times and I doubt he got hit anywhere near that. Nice one KTVU.

What an abomination of a payout. :wow

Indeed. Cho had only recently graduated the academy and was still in training- but she showed up anyway and got into the fight. She fell backwards as she was firing, and the other officer (Chris) saw that and started blasting through the wall- figuring the bad guy had shot her- in an effort to stop him.

CHP's lawyers have been getting a rep for finding the easy way out (money, instead of better lawyering) over the last decade.

While the CHP fucked up big time, the guy they shot was also a major fuck up.

This sums it up nicely.
The two officers probably should have slowed down and waited for backup. There was no immediate threat inside the house that I saw in the article, so no reason for the two of them to go inside right away.

And Gold should not have been high and should not have pointed a gun at a cop.

The case stems from what happened on July 23, 2019, in Salinas, when two CHP officers investigating a non-injury hit-and-run of a car went into a home with their guns drawn and found Gold hiding in his grandmother’s bathroom.

Gold was high on methamphetamine and was having delusions, both prosecutors and his attorneys said.

He had also stolen a truck from a family friend who had left the keys inside and driven it recklessly across town to get to the safety of his grandmother’s house in the Toro Park neighborhood, his attorneys acknowledged.

Just need to remember in a civil case unlike a criminal case where 12 jurors needed for conviction a civil case decision is a percentage of fault. A lawyer is almost guaranteed a dollar settlement if they can get a case in front of a jury. I was on a civil case where two motorcyclist with learner's permits crashed in San Jose due to improper water drainage in a turn and sued the city. One of the riders broke his hip and sued for one million. Experts for both side rode bikes through the same turn and came back with opposite conclusions. Jury found rider 50% at fault and awarded $500K and lawyer gets paid!

I think only when he got to Grandma's house... not during his drunken driving meth spree. Loser kid is a loser.

In other words, he was armed during the time that justified the shooting, as he pointed a loaded gun at the officer.

Cases like this are one reason police departments can’t find enough recruits.
Police work is such a thankless job.
Yes, these officers should have done better but were they wrong by $10M?
Society sides with the criminal more than the cop these days.

cant get political here but, this is a California issue not society imo

Trying to figure out what the cops should have done differently? Feel like media and politicians want there to be no accountability for committing crimes.

What’s the job of law enforcement? Isn’t it to enforce the law (sarcasm)?

Are we supposed to allow mentally ill, drug users who are armed, to drive around and hit cars? Then expect LE to do nothing about it?

What if the next time he decides to drive stolen cars through the city while high on meth or having a mental health crisis, he comes across you and/or your loved ones?

The media and their “reporting” and these money hungry “attorneys” should be ashamed of themselves.

More needs to be done to prevent folks from getting hooked on drugs, getting them off of that shit once hooked and helping them with their mental health issues.

I know Officer Weaver. Hes a really nice dude. Hes a motor officer. Im extremely sorry this happened to him.

I dont understand why there was a payout for a guy, high on meth, armed with a gun, who stole a vehicle. Do I think he deserved to be paralized and eventually die? No. But we all have consequences for our actions. We as riders should understand this more than others.
