Whats the deal? I want to buy ammo there and shoot it. Can I do that or is there a 10 day thing?

Pistols riffles and shotguns

Let's go shoot

You can step into a range, rent a pistol, buy their ammo, and shoot it right then and there.

Buying ammo for yourself is more involved, I honestly don't know the details any more save that the purchase is registered and there's a background check involved. If you own a registered firearm in the state AND that info is up to date, the background check is easier than if you aren't in the registry.

But if you just want to turn cash into noise and smoke, you can rent and shoot at a range with little more than a drivers license.

Depends on the range. Some will require that you bring your own gun in order to rent a firearm.

Most ranges have requirements similar to this to cut down on suicides. Best to call first to see what they require.

I want to bring my own guns anyway. I'll call Los Altos Rod and Gun. There was another one off Stevens Creek, and a couple down in Morgan Hill.

On a related note, I sold an SKS yesterday to an out of state friend. His FFL will not accept firearms from private parties, so I used Bullseye Bishop. For $100.00 the did the paperwork, boxed and shipped it. They are great people with no attitude. Tasteful piano music was playing, and the employees were respectful and had zero attitude. They sell ammunition as well as firearms. I have shopped there in the past and done PPTs there in the past.

I am lucky in that I can walk out my back door go about 100 yds and have access to a probably 400yd range if I really wanted to stretch it. I would say come here and shoot but the drive would be hellacious.

In the summer I do love the indoor ranges though as it saves me about a liter of blood loss to mosquitos and 5 gallons of sweat.

I’ve had good experiences with both Bullseye Bishop and Reeds.

I used to live there you know... A grand old time. I miss the crawdads and alligator stew.

I've been to Reeds once.

Reed's was awesome when they were on Alum Rock. The gun counter guys were mature and polite. I have done 3 PPTs at the Reed's indoor range, one was a satisfactory experience, the two were not. Attitudes and rudeness behind the counter. I will not be going there again.

Yup the alligator that had taken up residence in my pond has decided to move onto bigger and better pastures which is better for both of us.

I’ve purchased several guns from Reeds. I never experienced any rudeness or attitude.

The Fee, the Fee. You forgot to mention the Kaliforniastan Fee for the luxury of buying ammunition. Be sure not to call it a Tax, as that would require voter approval.

No ranges in Morgan Hill. Two up near Metcalf & the PGE substation.

#1- rifle & pistol range on the east side of 101 operated by Santa Clara County. Can't use a target with a head on it (I shit you not) cause that means something (I don't know what). https://parks.sccgov.org/santa-clara-county-parks/field-sports-park

#2- shotgun/handgun range on the west side of 101, west side on Monterey Rd, a mile or two south of #1. http://www.coyoteclays.com/

I forget how far San Jose extends down there but those are the ranges I was thinking of.

I just learned last night my GF served at the SCC range.

Back in '08/9 I was living here in Cottonwood, this was THE edge of town, water tank.
side view of road, a shooting site,
road up n' over the top,
Now !
A Dell Webb housing extravaganza.

Have to go up Mingus a few more miles to start blastin'

Update 1/28/26
Brand new fluid dump, graveled, out front, road smoothed over the hill, dump trucks and a loader.
More urban creep,

This range, a few miles short of Village of Oak Creek, VOC.
The "cheap" Sedona, red rocks, and all that.
100 yard target, of rocks and logs,
Shorter shotgun blasting,
and,
Tailgating.
