When did the f*cking airlines start charging for carry-on bag?

I went to check in for my flight tomorrow.

They wanted to charge me for picking a seat at check-in! :wtf

Then I saw the clincher, they want to charge me $50 for my carry-on and I have to check it!!! :wtf
When did this shit start?
 
this originated with the ultra low cost carriers (e.g. spirit).
when looking for flights, use google flights and select how many bags you plan to carry.
some airlines charge, some don't, some (UA) don't even allow carry-ons with 'basic economy', only a 'personal item' and a checked bag.
it does mean there's less of a bin space fight.
 
My flight is with UA, I didn't see anything about carry-on bags getting charged when I booked, but I wasn't looking for it.

I didn't even know to look out for it with a formerly reputable airline. If I had known what they were going to do to me, I would have paid the extra $80 for carry-on and seat selection when I booked it.

you obivously haven't flown lately they all suck ass. I have flown all the different carriers in the last year and they all have a minimum threshhold of suckage. I will say American was extra sucky my last trip but from what I understand Charlotte is just a shit fest of a hub no matter what so there is that also. Only good thing about Southwest is I can catch direct flight from HOU-> SJC so less chance of fuckery on the connections.
 
I got a United-branded credit card and don't have these issues. They're who I commute to and from SF with so it made sense.

Absolutely this. I have credit cards from Southwest and AA. And yes they are annual fee cards, but it’s easily covered if you fly a couple times a year and get the 1st checked bag free perk because you’re a cardholder. Plus mile/point multipliers when you use the card to pay for the fare and so on.

As usual, you're making too much sense, but with one exception.....flying in and outta SFO.
I completely understand why YOU use that airport but for those of us with options, Oakland is the way to go.
That city remains a feral cesspool but at least they have the airport thing figured out.
 
flew a ridiculous amount for business. quit and retired very early because i hated every. fucking. minute of it. used to love sitting there while the jam of passengers carrying way too much and too big shit tried to find open space for it all. and then the parade of, no space left, we’re gonna have to tag and load this in the belly. /sarcasm. if it were up to me, checked bags would be free, and any carry on over 2 square feet would be $1000 (whatever it takes to discourage that bullshit).

So much this. I have one for United and one for Southwest. Both pay off even better now with the rise in checked baggage fees plus I get a ton of free flights. My United miles I use for my daughter in Ohio to fly home on breaks and stuff and Southwest is for when we fly back to Cali to visit the fam. I still have yet to have a connection long enough to make use of the free United club perk or my long layovers always happen to be when I am on like Delta or AA. Pissed that United is no longer part of Star Alliance because that means I am missing out on like 15K miles here soon

Man the stuff people try to get in the overheads is ridiculous. I love the people who travel with musical instruments and try to stuff their shit in the overhead which then takes up one bin for one damn item. I use that infrequently but when going overseas I gate check my bag on the first flight as the bins are too small then use overhead on oversea flight so I can get through customs quicker and not have to wait for my bag so that $1K fee would kill me but could probably expense it which would add to my miles. so I guess a win-win.
 
I was surprised when UA wanted $80 for each baggage checked in. For 2 people, RT, I calculated it was better to pay business class since they allowed two pieces of luggage each.

Earlier this year, I experienced the new Southwest assigned seating. I did not like it. Checking in 23 hrs and 59 minutes and 59 seconds online still resulted in a middle aisle seat. Drinks still complimentary. Luckily, the return trip was low capacity, and I was assigned a window seat.

Once downgraded from Delta 3 person business class tickets. That is becoming more frequent say media reports. There are some DOT rights, but it varies since each airline has their interpretations of "downgrade."

It still beats driving or sea travel, but I do air travel less because of all the "open trenches" and delays.

I miss the days of the attractive airlines stewardesses who attended to my needs. Polite, professional and respected. One grabbed me by the arm and led me out of the bathroom to sit down before takeoff. I just followed orders, because when the shit hits the fan, they are the ones who will risk themselves for my safety.

OAK and SJC are basically monopolies for Southwest at this point. SJC has just a few more flights on other airlines, but is closer to more zillionaires. It's almost always way less expensive (like 1/2 to 1/3 the cost) to fly out of SFO. Sometimes for weird routes with multiple stops the other airports are less.

SFO is also one of the nicest airports in the country. OAK and SJC are good, though I have been only land-side at SJC since they built the 'new' terminal (what, 15 years ago)?
 
I don't mind flying. What I hate:

Plane pulls into the gate
Everyone on the plane stands up at the same time

I like flying Southwest into Burbank because they let passengers off from both ends of the plane.

Everyone with an aisle seat stands
You get a few who will stand and rush up a few rows for whatever goddamn reason (late connection flight excepted of course...FA's usually do a good job of asking people to stay seated who don't have a connecting flight).

I fly a lot. It's mostly United and Alaska now (card holder as well). Used to be SWA until they changed shit. If only they didn't fuck over their ALP people, perhaps I'd fly them again.
Air Canada when flying up north. Usually will try and book on an Airbus A220 if I can.
