I am replacing stator on my 2012 versus 650 has about 61k miles and notice that the starter clutch idler gear has a bit of free play in it and there are witness marks on crank where gear taps crank case. The amount of play in the idler gear is around 0.040" which seems excessive. I almost wonder if it is missing a shim spacer or something.

Anyone seen anything like this before, pretty sure this is the rattle I hear while riding.

I might have to reassemble it but weird issue.

Subscribed because I'd like to know the answer.

First thing I’d do is check with a good manual and see if there are any specifications or any missing parts.

I am being lazy trying not to pull rotor and starter clutch apart I think I need locking tool to hold crank. I looked at pictures of the starter clutch assembly the shim bushing goes towards starter face side of idler gear. I might see if I can find a 0.020" spacer to space gear away from case. I will see if I can find repair manual to find service wear limits of shim thing and the gear.

Figure the bike has the ducati rattle at a price I can afford. I will keep y'all posted if I figure anything else out.

When I had starter issues on my XR650L about ten years ago, I just bought another (used) one on ebay for fifty bucks. I later bought a rebuild kit, I think also from ebay, for about $13 and rebuilt the old one, which is now back on the bike. The "spare" is sitting in a box on a shelf in my garage for "someday" when I need it.

Just pointing out an other possible option.

Ok, after thinking a bit, when the starter intermediate gears are installed the idler gear is stationary until the starter in engaged. Basically just sits thereIMG_20260525_123823376_HDR.jpg. I guess if it rattles it rattles, until it makes me crazy it shall be.

I did order the repair manual so hope I don't pester with my questions.

I would want to know why one of my gears was contacting the crankcase and fix it

Bike is back together with an electrosport stator, runs good. Think the original stator did 61k miles.

The manual arrived while I'm outta town so will do research into starter idler gear backlash. I found the spec for gear spacer. The idler gear only rotated under starter power so if it is rattling it is just tapping the case, not a huge deal.

Put this baby to bed.

I think that the starter clutch bolts to the back of the rotor. Maybe the bolts are loose?

Ok, got the book, not particularly informative as far as to how much play it should have, just says to inspect for wear or damage. To remove the starter clutch stuff you have to pull rotor which attached to crank, don't want to fight with it yet. The starter gear works properly so I will keep on keeping on.

The rotor is attached to the starter clutch, they seem tight, unless the main rotor bolt loosened and the rotor backed off the shaft. That could cause excess distance between rotor/starter clutch and gear.
