ADV/DS ride Lake Berryessa/Knoxville OHV/Rayhouse Rd.

Knoxville and Rd40 Attempt

I took the KLR out to Knoxville yesterday along with a couple of much more experienced riders with platted dirt bikes. We did manage to find some common ground though which was fun.

Here is the recorded route (in white):

Here is a link to the track in CalTopo: https://caltopo.com/m/AEK06

We entered Knoxville at the Southern entrance, then rode down into Hunting Creek Camp and back up to the paved road. Some sections of both the descent into the campground and ascent back up to the road I found challenging, but managed to not drop the bike lol.

Then we took Reiff Rd / Rd 40 and it was easy up to the gate, maybe even freshly graded. But soon after descending from the gate it became rutted and very loose, at which point I turned around and my buddies went back to knoxville to try some of the single track.

That said, it was fun and a great learning experience for me.

Also, tried out a new nav setup using DMD2:

Thanks SFMCjohn, appreciate the kind words. Seeing pics of your green "pre-gen" on top of peaks and next to tents has inspired me lol. (Love that pre-gen term btw, haven't heard that one before.) Hope to see you on the trail someday.

Wanted to give everyone a heads up that a section of Reiff Rd/County Road 40 is closed due to construction at Davis Cr. Dam and road work from the Lake County line to hwy 16.

Homestake Mining Co. is running 30 ton rock trucks and heavy equipment between the dam and their gate and Calfire is maintaining/rebuilding the Yolo County section of the road. Extreme caution should be taken between hwy 16 and the four corners as there is no closure on this section of road.

Unfortunately the closure is necessary to prevent injury, as you can imagine, coming around a corner and meeting a rock truck or dozer would end badly. On the Brightside, the road is going to be in great shape when it reopens.
