Any BARFers have feedback on getting back to riding after hernia surgery?

I've had the same surgery before. Just wait. It's not worth pushing it and follow up surgery sucks.

just take it easy/rent or borrow a car for a month or two. You over do it & pull out your stitches/or rip a cut that's healing= another two months.

I had 2 at the same time when I was a toddler, & recall having to wait it out what seemed like forever. Just take your time, & take it easy. The wait will be over in no time.....:thumbup

Had an umbilical hernia Jan. of last year...surgery that March where they used the mesh patch. Wasn't allowed to do anything for 6 weeks, then was cleared to go back to work and resume all normal activities. Was on the bike when I was cleared. I'd say listen to your body and ease into things. My surgery was very easy (didn't even need to use any of the pain meds they gave me), but I hear the repair surgery is really tough. It's been over a year and for me, the most difficult part has been getting over the fear of reinjury. I push myself pretty hard and I have yet to be able to overcome that particular mental hurdle completely.

Meandad and Tydive, how long did your burning persist? Did riding make it worse and did you ride through it or take it easy afterwards?

It felt tight for months. I'd get the burning sensation off and on for about six months. I'm not good about taking it easy when injured so don't use me as a metric for reasonable behavior. :laughing

The main thing is that if the bike leans too far at a stop just stand and let it go.

Good tip above about keeping your knees on the tank and stopping gently.

Damn, this morning the doc confirmed my fear..... Left inguinal hernia. Happened during a dead lift last week. Will see the surgeon next Monday then arrange for surgery.....Hawthorne rally is only 4 weeks away:(

Good info in this thread though.

jjgirl13, how is your recover so far?

Zombie thread revival time!

I am facing this scenario in a few weeks (5/21 to be exact). In my case, bilateral inguinal hernias + an umbilical one. Doc says no riding for 3 months afterwards. I don’t like that at all. My poor bike! 😢

Anyone been in the same metaphorical boat lately?

Fortunately I WFH, so at least I’m spared having to figure out how to commute.

Your body is telling you to slow down and not do so much. I’d listen to it and stop riding for a while. Give it time to heal fully.

The mesh needs time for your tissues to grow into it. And that doesn’t happen quickly. The mesh will eventually become part of your body. Until then it’s just a patch held on by stitches which is fundamentally weak and is prone to tearing loose.

So much this ^^^^. Not been there but don’t re-roof your house on your time off and tear up the mesh screen implant like my brother, because it is difficult to remove after it tears. You’ll be riding again in a remarkably short time. Do your PT at home for the rest of your life, unlike my bro. GL

When I go the mesh installed in 2019 the doc let me ride again in 8 weeks as I recall. When I got my hip replaced in 2017 the doc let me ride in 6 weeks but wouldn't let me cross step for a year.

And to fold in a more moto-related topic: my bike has a leaking fork seal. Get it fixed now, just in time for my bike to sit idle for a while, or wait?

To put it another way: do fork seals leak while riding, while parked, or both?

Fork seals can leak from both sitting and riding but more often from riding.

Your healing time may be perfect for freshening up your forks. And before you do that, I’d measure your sag and let whoever does the work know so they can make adjustments if required.

Yes. OP will be 100% again with the passage of time.

Necro thread revival update:

Surgery was on 5/21. On 6/8 I saw my doctor and she suggested that although I was healing well, I should wait “a couple of weeks” before riding.

Today I went on my first *very careful* ride. No issues to report. Life is good. :ride
