I'm replacing the coils on my FZ. It's been a long diagnostic process, but all evidence points to coils as the cause of my misfire at idle.

Caltric coils are advertised on Ebay and Amazon with the Yamaha part number. These are pretty straight forward two wire, wasted spark, coils.

Caltric coil is less than half the cost of the OEM yamaha coil. I've already got Ebay used yamaha coils in the FZ and these have caused the problem I have now. Used coils are no longer an option and it raises the question about the longevity of the OEM coils.

Caltric makes several types of aftermarket parts for motos. Any Caltric fans out there?

typical barf not answering your question... did you swap coils around and see if the misfire follows a particular coil?

i have no experience with caltric. i have used dyna aftermarket coils and the generally have a good reputation. perhaps they have an option for you?

difficult to assign the misfire to a particular cylinder with all the bodywork and the misfire occurs randomly every 5 to 10 seconds. As a wasted spark system, two cylinders would be impacted if only 1 coil was doing this. Its a bit more pronounced when you hold the throttle slightly open and keep it around 2k RPMs. Above 3k RPMs there's no misfire at all. I don't have a thermal camera and the wet finger "sizzle test" doesn't reveal anything I can see. Checking the plugs hasn't revealed anything either. They all look equal. Somehow, sitting at a traffic light makes it worse (which I think is from engine heat) than sitting in my driveway testing all the way to fan switch temperature.

I went ahead a bought the OEM coils. Family members borrow this moto so don't want to leave anyone in the lurch however small that probability is.

No experience with Caltric coils, but have had 100% success with Caltric voltage regulators. BMW cost=$140, Caltric= $23.00. Four years later and all is well. YMMV
In the past I also used Dyna coils and they worked fine with never a failure, half price of BMW dealer.
