I'm doing my renewal currently. Since I reside in the CoCo county I go through the Sheriff. Every county is different. I guess CoCo requires qualifying at the Sheriff's range as opposed through a CA DOJ approved training company. They can be more forgiving I guess.

That said, not including ammo costs on range visits to stay fresh and prep, it's gonna be at least $400+. Last 2 range visits I went through 150rd of 9mm and 50rd of 10mm -- $$$. Fees are $200 for mandatory 8 hour course, then fees for the paperwork and processing. It took me 18-20 months initially. Renewal supposed to be faster. I guess for the renewal I have to get 3 letters of reference and some other BS. In Alameda county a psych eval is needed.

Then the actual test to qualify in CoCo is below. I passed 2 years ago but was going to the range more often and did a couple private lessons that helps A LOT! I need to get better and dry firing and holster draw 4+ nights a week.

Total rounds: 18 rounds per firearm.
  • Passing score: 126 out of 180 points (on a COCOSO-1P target).
  • Target scoring:
    • Inner circle: 10 points
    • Outer ring: 9 points
    • Massive area: 8 points
    • Course of fire:
      • 5 yards: 6 rounds in 5 seconds
      • 7 yards: 6 rounds in 10 seconds
      • 10 yards: 6 rounds in 15 seconds

If ya wanna play ya gotta pay.... Have you seen the entry fees for an Ironman or Escape From Alcatraz triathlon lately! Yikes!

USPSA have some fun while practicing for you quals.

Dammit I really need to hit up the matches here again locally but need to get some work in so I don't embarrass myself.

I mean, its a static course of fire, right? Lift the pistol up, timer starts with the first shot, or someone says "Go"? Three rounds, 6 rounds each. It's not a draw and fire exercise is it?

Is it the timing? You basically have to hit the black six times.

Mind, if you're firing 10mm, I can see the potential issue. Whats funny, is I bet some ranges would bark at you doing 6 rounds in 5 seconds for practice.

When my kiddos get older I'll get back into it. I couldn't justify spending all day on a sunday to only shoot for like 2 minutes total.

Hard to live fire practice from the draw and most ranges. Not allowed to draw and fire and rapid fire also also tough.

Not really static in that you wait until you hear the buzzer than draw and fire. The timing piece adds some stress but really more dry fire practice will help. I just signed up for my late November. Have a month to prepare.

I did find some lower power 10mm. I think it's 1080fps vs 1400fps bear rounds.

This! I have been yelled at just for using copper projectile Underwood ammo in my 10mm, lol.

This also - nothing beats USPSA competition for learning to balance control, accuracy and speed.

I thought the spendthrift were manufacturing ammo at home?
Oh, they do. Not me, not that I don't have some Scottish thriftiness in my bloodline. Just lazy. And ADHD mindset is not conducive to reloading process.

The fees and attending costs to practice and qualify are absurd. While I do believe wielding a firearm is a task that should be steeped in practice and properly done, the state gives driver's licenses to folks who prove, statistically, to be far more fatal to We The People than some guy with a gun.

Yeah have to be careful copper projectiles can kill a ranges backstop. But kind of funny because didn't Cali ban all lead ammo or was that just or hunting? I know here in the swamplands its just hunting but also just for waterfowl and turkeys.

LA has constitutional open carry and sometimes the people that take advantage of that fact scare me more than the criminals that may be out there.

CA banned lead for hunting, lead still OK for ranges but it's best to practice with what you intend to use.
The unintended consequence of going to copper, being that some of the solid Cu "drill bit" rounds in magnum cartridges will defeat body armor.

Didn't know CCW varied that much between counties.

After SB2 course renewals from four hours to eight which I didn't realize until I signed up for the class. Merced County I filled out an online application, signed up for the CCW Renewal course (eight hours in one day) submit the signed off form online then schedule my appoinment at the sheriff's office to get my photo taken and that's it.

Qualifying is super easy, I have three on my roster (max limit).
