Doing a major service on a 2013 Multistrada. First time under a desmo valve cover.

When I was measuring the clearances, at first I thought, why isn't there one clearance? I expected the valve to be loose between the openers and closers. But no, there are springs holding the closers. Valve closing springs.

Do all desmo heads have this? Does the spring or the cam close the valve at speed? (yeah, both?) Any Ducatistis here know the reasoning?

Also, and I guess this is a second question, all the clearances were on the limit of loose. Makes sense that the valve seat wear would loosen up the closer clearance. Why was the opener also loose, then? Finger follower wear? I don't know the specifics of the previous major service unfortunately.

Aigt I'm gonna answer my own having hand turned the crank many times

The closing springs are necessary to seal the valve tight whatever the condition may be.

The closing springs can be weaker than normal valve springs for less parasitic loss, the cam is operative for most of the travel.

Instead of valve float, you have cam closers.

Don’t you mean valve closers? Cams cannot be “closed”.
