Good-ass cover songs

I'm quite sure at least some of you have heard K-POP demon Hunter music...
I think this cover is impressive in how far it stretches away from the original, while still sounding pretty great!

 
Is it a cover when the songwriter records a song they wrote that someone else recorded first?
