a friend of mine wants to work with a good instructor to teach her, a total beginner, how to safely handle and shoot guns. she lives in sf and needs someone who can supply everything needed to learn.

thank you in advance.

I know a guy, he's not an instructor per se, but he's moto people and likes the ideal of anyone who's interested in firearms knowing how to use them effectively. Been thinking about hitting him up myself.

I’ve taken several newbies to the range. Ask around or visit/call the closest gun range. Most ranges will have an instructor or know of one. Please pay for the ammo you use if you go with a friend. That stuff isn’t cheap.

I like .22’s for beginners. Long guns first, then pistols.

You haven't said "where". Its a big state...and a big Bay Area w/traffic.

My Nephew has been an instructor for several years up in the north bay for Women on Target. They provide the firearms and have several classes.

Attached his flyer.

He's a NRA Certified Instructor

Good morning. I basically learned how to shoot with Bill and Sonny then my boyfriend helped me with target practice in my back yard w/BBgun

A friend I haven't seen for a while wants to learn to shoot a pistol (for self defense, with "a gun that will fit my small left hand". She hasn't done any research, and I don't have a small female left hand. Hmm. Do any BARF ladies have a recommendation that would fit her criteria?

Look for ccw instructors in your area. Some might offer one on one lessons.

I will teach her the basics of shooting, stance, grip, sight picture, trigger manipulation, and most importantly, safety. I am researching local instructors with specialized classes for ladies, which I will encourage her to take.

I now wish I hadn't sold my M&P Shield and Makarov; although I didn't like shooting the shield and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it, perhaps it would have worked out for her. Ah well, water under the bridge at this point.

OP, does your friend say what her ultimate goals are?
Self defense?
Hunting? (long guns)
Competition?
Recreation/hobby?

Self defense, which in and of itself concerns me. I am going to suggest strongly that she practice often, and will offer to go to the range with her. I used to shoot every week without fail before lockdown, and have only been to the range 3 times since July. Ergo, I could use the practice as well.

It concerns me because she will most likely end up with a compact or sub-compact, which in my experience most people who don't practice with them often, don't shoot them well. Ken raises his hand here in regards to his M&P Shield experience. I shot it many times side by side with a good friend of mine, who is also a very good pistol shooter. He would get nice groups with his, and Ken (me, that is;)), ended up with a target that looked like buckshot was used! I have a CZ Tactical Sports in 9mm that I shoot rather well; it makes me happy with the groups I produce.

I'll assume she wants to acquire a firearm at some point so another question for the OP is budget and quality desired. The sky is the limit on both.

As she wants to learn to shoot for self defense, I can only assume she will buy one. She is going to check with her brother, whose background I know nothing about, for recommendations. I wouldn't feel recommending anything as I haven't been following industry developments for a number of years. My background is simply that I have been shooting for decades; no competitions, and I have taken a few group courses for fun.

This may be going down the rabbit hole too deep and too personal but regarding the need for self-defense - is the need specific (is she facing an immediate threat)?
Is the need more general (living in a crappy place or working nights and needs protection, for example)?
Are there remedies she can take aside from, or in addition to taking up arms?

Stop me if I'm overthinking this. I've got too much time on my hands tonight.
