Have you moved on from sport bikes as you get older?

When I was in my 20s and 30s, and even early 40s, I didn't ever think I would not want to have a sport bike. Well, now that I'm in my 50s, crotch rockets are in my past. My last sport bike was a 2021 BMW S100RR M Package. Loved that bike but after having it for 2 years I realized it's not the kind of riding I want to do anymore. My biggest reason is it was hard for me to turn my head to look over my shoulder due to past injuries from car accidents. I've developed arthritis in my neck and no longer have full range of motion.

Since 2019 I've been into baggers and had a 2013 CVO Breakout that I really regret selling. I find the baggers have come a long way and don't feel like I'm giving up much performance anymore like I would have 20+ years ago. I enjoy longer scenic rides now but still want to carve through the canyons and mountains here in Colorado, when I'm in the mood to do so. I am now down to only two motorcycles, a blue chromed out 2006 Street Glide with a 96 cubic inch upgrade and a blacked out 2024 Road Glide that i've been stupidly spending a lot of money on to upgrade it to a performance bagger. I hope to make my first trip to Sturgis this year, work schedule permitting.

Just curious if anyone else has switched to a non-sport bike as they got older?
Man I haven't been on here in a long time but this one hit me in the heart haha. I'm currently going through this now.. A little different reasoning but the same none the less. I ride a 2017 FZ10 and there's times when I still love it but usually I just feel like it's time for something else. Finally ready to just cruise on something more stretched out and comfortable. Told myself I don't need more than one bike again so I'm still kinda holding on to my old love but I'm trading this thing in one day for a road glide.

This might be a good year to do it. HD has two new models coming out. That ups the odds of finding a good trade-in road glide at one of the Bay Area HD dealers. Go for it!

I just like motorcycles, period. I don't care who manufactures them. I don't care about stereotypes associated with bike A or bike B. If it has 2 wheels, I appreciate it for what it is. I can still carve in the canyons with the best of them on almost any bike (sport bike or bagger, or?), but I can also get into just cruising long distances.

Turned 71 and sold my 2005 ZX10. Then I went to the store and got a 2024 ZX10. I also recently picked up a 1982 Honda MB5 and am refreshing my two-stroke tuning memory.

The 2005 10 and Gixxer Thou were two of the best bikes made in that era IMO.

No wonder it was worth it for Louemc to put a real handlebar and Scotts damper on his 10.

RIP Lou

I have never owned a sport bike and have no real plans to. My XSR900 is plenty sporty for me.

I always marvel at the sport bike riders out there, many not old at all, who ride with straight arms, elbows locked, bolt upright. If that is the way you are riding your sport bike, wouldn't a more upright riding position make sense?

Did the ak20 cartridge kit and stock shock revalve and respring on my ninja 1000. Now it handles like a sport bike! Very happy!

Not sure if this bike has been mentioned but the Yamaha FJR1300 is loved by the guy that does my suspension. Looks too heavy and big for my taste but it looks very comfortable.

I gave up sport bikes and went to super moto. Nearly killed myself a few times years ago. Went to dirt bikes, gave up supermoto and stayed dirt. Then went to sport naked years ago thinking it was the mature choice with the upright bars and realized that my 2020 super Duke 1290 R was gonna kill me after rolling on a wheelie at 130 mph. Gave up sport naked and bought my first adventure bike KTM 1190 adventure R. Why did I wait so long??? The golden goose, my unicorn, the bike that scratches all the itches. Long distance, super moto, dirt riding, jumping, traveling, trail riding, exploring, daily Rider, high speed hijinks, urban troublemaking, canyon carving etc etc. The AR15 of motorcycles and all those endless farkles and goodies.

Harleys and cruisers can kick rocks. I tried that too lol.

I actually gravitated toward sport bikes as I gotten older. The forward lean position takes much weight off my back and knees. It doesn't all go on my hands, but rather my gut and that's easier.

I didn't gravitate to...I never left....but yeah....largely for the reasons you describe.

I started off in sport touring bikes due to a strong sense of self-preservation, and an appreciation for my lack of ability to control myself sometimes.

I had a 600cc sport bike for a while, when I was doing a bunch of track days, but sure enough it turned out to be a problem when I had it on the street.

So now I'm riding standards, but they do have a lot of horsepowers

Call me not surprised.
Your affection for that British mistress of yours has been on full display. :laughing

It was love at first sight for the Triumph, we were meant for each other.

I crashed the hyper a month ago and it’s almost a write off. Glad it wasn’t the triumph but if I had the triumph that day the crash wouldn’t have happened. Hyper is a bad influence.
