Home Garden 2024 / 2025

Irises like their root partly exposed like halfway out and not crowded. They can take awhile to set and usually require minimal attention. Mine need to be loosened with a fork from below and spread out (should be every 2-3 years). Got pic? Also they flag this time of year especially with heat.

The rhizomes need to be exposed but not the roots. If roots dry out, Irises will die. They store the food and energy for their growth in their rhizomes which should be exposed to the sun. But the sun has been blazingly hot these days. These are newly planted irises so I was expecting new growth to sprout out.

Right, my bad, I used the wrong term. Mine pretty much die off in summer til next year. I’ll try to get a pic later. It is a good time to plant them for next year’s bloom. Mebbe just need more time. What color will they be?

PONDS and KOI - who's got a pond? (Didn't want to start a separate thread since this is "water" garden related.)
Gone two weeks and the water hyacinth went "gonzo" with all the hot sunshine!!!
Probably 3/4's of it has been removed, approximately half of that went to the compost pile and the rest in the green can.
They're pretty in bloom.
.
Copper, 3-1/2 yr old Boston, doing her morning check on her shoal of Koi.
.
Anyone growing water lilies?
Also, any recommendation on a pond vac?

I bought 30 fresh peppers from ebay. Hoping I can get these to sprout next year. I have not had luck with store bought habaneros.

Cheap garden fertilizer: ask starbucks for their grounds. You can get a few bags a week and spread it throughout your yard. 2 big bennies are 1) free fertilizer that is nitrogen rich and 2) your yard smells like coffee.

We save our coffee grounds for the compost bin too. You can also sprinkle some onto your houseplants. Not sure of exactly how much so I only add a little to them.

Nights are getting cold here, the peppers will not last much longer here if I don't try to cover them (Which I probably won't). Maybe i can get one more batch of peppers for hot sauce...

I did make the Rick Bayless roasted tomatillo salsa and it was the best I've ever made. I like that guy's recipes a lot!!

I thought there was a more current garden thread but I couldn't find it. So I'm resurrecting this one to tell you...

Time to plant garlic folks!! I am almost out of last seasons batch and I'm not happy about it. The crap at stores, even organic which I usually get, SUCKS compared to homegrown. It's rancid. I hate that I ran out and will have to buy the store stuff until my next harvest.

Garlic is SUPER easy to grow, if you like garlic, you will love homegrown.

Cheers!!

Do you grow it from seed or use a store-bought clove?

Cloves. I've never tried seeds. You can use organic fists from the store, this year I went to the nursery (Sonoma Mission Gardens), and they popped up in less than a week. Do it!!!

My tomato plant may have given me my last one for the season,
I took it down to a local chef and transformed it into a BLAT,
Bacon, Lettuce, Avocado, Tomato,
I have about four in pink, If the freeze holds off a couple more weeks, , ,

kumquats. i had to take these off bc the plant was a lil’ stressed. just made a redneck greenhouse in my porch to protect all of them from the oregon winter.

Nice! We have a kumquat too. Yours look huge compared to what ours makes. We have a Meyer lemon and a Valencia orange that look to be ripening soon. We also have a lot of green tomatoes, I'm hoping for a bit of warm weather to ripen them up for one last bunch. Peppers are on their last legs. I just harvested the last of my serranos (Made more hot sauce, woot). Ghost peppers are hanging on.

Get that garlic going peeps! You won't regret it.

Rain due Sat. cold spell following next week, don't expect much more ripening.

I have realized what you see for fruit, I "fathered" .
I bought this plant as a lark, to see if I could grow here in Az.
On sale from Tractor Supply, had to try, , ,
All summer, bloomed like crazy, but no bees, or any insects.
Blossoms dried up and fell off, I started trimming off the dead ones, to speed the process.
I caught a vid of some woman speaking of pollinating tomatoes, I tried it.
Finally I learned how, in Sept. I was only getting one tomato at a time, three so far, by Ma Nature
I bumped that,
What you see here are mine, my babies, by my hand.
Sort of a Frankenstein crop.

What did you DO this summer ? ?

Did a recount on budding tomatoes, yesterday, I found another 5 peanut sized, have started.
Ma Nature must have felt a bit guilty, & went back to work.
23 started,
Cold snap due next week.

Forgot to update. First sprouts got burned under sun. Second round was too late. Carolina Reapers.

I don't know what that dark spot means.
