Concert review a thing?
Bridge City Sinners at the Mystic in Petaluma CA
Opener: Shawn D'amario 30 minutes
Just a solo guitarist playing songs he wrote about shit he went through in 2008. Good player but not great. Good sound but not great. Good lyrics, but not great. Ended with a duet with the violinist from BCS in honor of I think the original opener. Best song of the set. Crowd could care less and talked over his entire set. He was gruff but happy to be there. Don't think he was prepared to tour.
3/10 - did not buy anything
Middle band: Liam St John 45 minutes
Tell me you want to be Jack White without calling yourself Jack Whiteish.
Good stage presence, fun sound, drummer was killer, lead guitarist could play, stand up bass was bland and Liam was just kind of fun. Good performance, very Nashville sound with Seattle lyrics. Crowd started filling in but no real energy or engagement. Nobody even reached for the set list after the show.
6/10 - bought a sticker
Headliner: Bridge City Sinners Almost 90 minutes
Been looking forward to this show for, well, years. Missed the last two times they were in the area and then they've been doing international tours. First shocker was that they stripped the entire stage from the previous bands. Drums, mics, amps, everything. Then set up their own stands and a couple little amps plugged in line and that was it. All 5 standing in a row just playing.
New CD so lots of stuff from that mixed in with some of their standards. They only did 1 of my 3 favorites but everything they did was just on point and in sync. They've obviously been touring for awhile because they had their set down. Libby (lead singer) was sick and kept apologizing for her voice, but I didn't notice. She sounded great and that female scream was exactly what I needed to rustle my jimmies.
Circle pit to little mermaid songs was a new one for me. Wall of death costume contest was fun. Crowd had way more energy but a lot of people weren't sure what to expect from the conversations I had.
8.5/10 - bought stuff, good performance but, going through the motions isn't the right way to say it. She was conservative because she was saving her voice for the rest of the tour.
Venue: mystic theater
Always a great venue and usually bands seem to really play well compared to SF shows the day after. Little rough on the infrastructure but sound was good and friendly staff. Projector had a scratched lens and the lighting needed safety cables but that's just a me complaint.
Free water cups and fill stations is a bonus.
8/10 will go back
