Phoenix, the hot place

My goodness, this has turned into the “clean your helmet “ thread. I have never. I have many helmets, and I do the headsock thing. Hmmm…
Plus I live in the center of the universe. The weather here is lovely. Cursed I am.
You do know a dirty helmet lining is the number 1 cause of Grey Hair and premature Baldness!....
Right?

Not sure what kind of hygiene can prevent your head from sweating buckets when riding in 110+ heat

Sweat in and of itself doesn't stink. The bacteria it mingles with and grooms does. Less bacteria on your person means less stank. In other words, wash your ass and your clothes (and your helmet liners) regularly and especially after a heavy sweat. If you leave the sweaty liners in there, it breeds bacteria which begets stink. If you're already funky and put something on, including a helmet, you're going to transfer that funk to your helmet liner which naturally makes your helmet funky (or funkier) too. This is why washing the liners is important.

If I lived in a Phoenix like climate Id definitely look into the balaclava idea.
When riding off-road my dirt bike helmet would be drenched in sweat with temperatures way lower than what Phoenix sees. The liner in that isn’t removable.

I have to wash my bicycle helmet at least once a month...a lot of 105+ rides.

I tend to shower in the evening when I complete a ride or am prepping for one. That way I am clean-ish and I can get up and go. My last helmet was getting kinda gross though, if it hadn't been replaced I'd have replaced all the pads this year.

It's the other materials in the helmet, which can be removed. You aren't going to heart the polystyrene by washing.
Hurt? No. Clean? I doubt soap and water will do much to it either. Maybe just the surface but stink permeates everything.

Dirtbike helmet goes in 5 gallon bucket with shampoo, conditioner, and pressure wash after almost every hot ride.

As a sidenote: Freezing kills bacteria. On occasions my baseball caps go in the freezer.

Has anybody tried the new stuff, Lume/Mando?
This stuff is based on killing bacteria that causes the stink, over a longer time.
I did buy the unscented creme, and the starter pack includes moist towelettes, that quick wipe may work

Duration and intensity has to come into play, concerning solar radiation.
This stuff is a force of its' own here in Az, a glowing orb in a fog bank ain't agonna get 'er done.

Yeah I was gonna ask about that...freezing inactivates the bacteria but as soon as they're thawed they're going to come right back to active status again. :dunno

Verified Freezing will not kill bacteria.., I stand corrected.
… where as if you raise the temperature to 121 degrees Celsius for at least 10 minutes it will.

Flash freezing kills parasites in fish...but that's not bacteria, I guess.

Some insights on Phoenix heat

Things have changed, that global warming thing has made Phoenix THE hottest town in Az.
Past history has the Colorado River the hot spot due to low elevation and narrow gorge.
Bullhead was top heat, Havasu close second, maybe Yuma next, before Phoenix, three/four years ago.

Phoenix has its weather station @ Sky Harbor airport, southeast end, up against the Gila River.
This is a huge heat island that is affecting relative temperature, and rain fall.
Average heat and rain are affected to higher heat and less rain, location is making it worse.
Phoenix is now pushing for the high heat site record, for the state. These numbers are abnormal, and skewing results, as to the NEW normal? Where will it stop?

If they don't move the weather station to a more average temp/rain location in Phoenix, I see the EPA and such clamping down with more smog type fixes for the state.
