New upright freezer

I have had a Frigidaire upright freezer for more than forty years. It has worked great the
whole time until recently when the door seal stopped sealing properly. Air gets in from the
bottom and makes what looks like an upsidedown snowbank at the top. I tried tracking down a
new seal to fix it - it still works after all - but couldn't be sure if the stuff listed from
Google searches would work. A local applicance repair company said that they couldn't fix it.

Okay, maybe we got our money's worth out of that one - time to buy a new one. But this time
frost free so we don't have to go to the bother of defrosting the thing two or three times a
year. The place I bought it offered free delivery to my garage. They charge if they set it up,
but I can do that. So here it is delivered, after taking off all of the packing material.

And here it is ready to go. Just need to wait a few hours for it to get properly cold, then
transfer everything from the old one to the new one.

I figure I can sell the old one on Craigslist for twenty bucks, explaining exactly what
condition it's in, and have someone else haul it off for me. Who knows, with a proper seal
maybe it could last another forty years.
I live 30+ minutes from town. I have a chest freezer that is one of my most appreciated appliances. Almost up there with the dishwasher.

It's tough enough getting to the back of the random stuff my wife puts in the upright one. I can't imagine what would get buried at the bottom of a chest freezer at my house. :laughing

We got an upright freezer a few years back and love it.

So much easier to see stuff and not forget about it.

My wife makes a lot of stock so 1/3 of it is full of bones and veggie cutting and stock frozen in blocks then vacuum sealed.

Home made stock has so many uses and it is almost free.

We got an upright freezer when we started taking care of my father-in-law, which happened to coincide with the worst of Covid-related shortages of everything. We figured we’d just waltz into Airport Appliance, or wherever, and pick one up. Not so. We had a hell of a time finding one. As it turned out, Airport Appliance called to tell us they got 30 freezers in, all the exact same model, but they’d save one for us if we wanted. It was the exact model we wanted, so we got lucky.

Every freezer should come with one of those Seal-a-Meal vacuum sealer things. Those 2 items made our lives so much easier while being full-time caregivers, and now I’m not sure how we’d get along without them.

Can relate! I’m 5’1”, and when we shopped for a new washer a few years ago I had a hard time finding one where I could reach the bottom! No way could I live with a chest freezer 😄

If you wanted to try and fix it and have two freezers I have had good luck finding the original part number and then googling that to get replacements for old appliances. Was even able to find a new door shelf for an old ass Kenmore fridge we had for 20 years.

No thanks. When I made the decision to get the new one that included having the old one gone. Specifically, I don't want to ever defrost a freezer again, even if the rest of it works well.

I will say this.. I've used America's tire for some of my other vehicles through the years and the results are hit or miss. But when they do miss, they own up to it and do their best to make you whole.

Last year, I took my new Tacoma with 100 miles on it to America's Tire to get the OEM tires swapped with some 3 peak snowflake AT tires. They managed to scratch up 3 of the 4 wheels. The damage wasn't terrible, likely just due to the tech rushing things, but the truck was new and it kinda bothered me. It took months of back and forth, but they refunded me half the cost of the new tires, and paid out a check for 4 new OEM wheels + labor.

At the end they made me more than whole, but was just a bunch of wasted time. I really wish the techs there were just a bit more careful esp when they see that the vehicle is new.

Where do people with really nice cars go and have tires put on without a tire tech scratching the wheels?
Welp. They bill me out at $385 an hour.

I like to tell people to go to places where tires is their primary business. They do hundreds of tires a week (if not per day), so they will always have well maintained state of the art equipment. So places like America’s Tire, Firestone, even the Costco Tire Center. However…you’ve got nice equipment being operated by just a complete mixed bag of technicians. Maybe it’s some kid’s first week in the business (they tend to start at places like that), or maybe you got the seasoned tech that’s been busting tires for years. Hopefully you get the latter.

In the end, it’s word of mouth. So asking around is just the best thing. And since you asked, I’ll give you one. Other than me of course, since I only work on a specific handful of cars.

Five Points Tire in Redwood City.

Both America's Tire and Costco have been a hit or miss as to the quality of tire mounting and balancing. Your statement is absolutely true..

About 15 years ago, I was service manager for a Wheel Works store. If I did your tires or a couple other guys in my crew? You got some custom painted reverse mount 26s…sure it’ll be a bear but we’ll get em done with no damage. Some of the kids I had working there at the time…probably not a good idea. I tried to steer the difficult jobs away from the rookies, but I only worked 5 out of the 7 days of the week. So yup, some folks missed.
