It’s by choice and every now and then, I get to combine the two. About 15 years ago, I was planning to ski a 2,500’ couloir in the eastern Sierra. The day before, I was scoping the route out with binoculars and found blue water ice in a pinch point 1,500’ up. I packed ice tools and crampons and when I got to the isle the next day, found a 40’ frozen waterfall, formed from avalanche debris that had been freezing and thawing for a couple of weeks. Put on the crampons and tools, climbed the ice and summited the couloir. After a rest and a snack, I put on my teles, skied down to the waterfall, switched to crampons, down climbed the ice, switched back to skis and finished the route. Pretty great day.
