Tomorrow marks the 3 year anniversary of a very sad day for Oakland PD and all law enforcement. Sgt. Mark Dunakin, Officer John Hegge, Sgt. Irv Romans, and Sgt. Dan Sakai all lost their lives while serving our community.

Please take a moment to think positive thoughts for their families, friends, and co-workers.

Today might be a good day to thank an officer for doing their job.

To Mark,

I miss you my friend. You were a great person, and you are dearly missed.

There was a video floating around of Mark and I competing in the last man standing event at the OPD motor comeptition in '08. Anyone have a link? I'd like to see it again.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Requisat in pace, brothers.

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Erv Romans was a great guy and a friend. We served together as Marines in VMA-133 at NAS Alameda.

Oo-Rah Sgt. Romans. Semper Fidelis Devil Dog. You are missed.

I was living in oregon when they died. It gave me this awful, sinking feeling to read about their deaths. Thank you for reminding us of them.

Rest in Peace, gentlemen. I will take some time to reflect on what they gave and what it means.

My thoughts and prayers are with their friends and families. Thank you for your service. You are greatly appreciated by those of us who benefit from your sacrifices.

Day it happened, we were just coming home from a peaceful camping trip. Most surreal and sad feeling hearing the news when we got home. Sad day for sure and thank you for reminding us to not forget eventhough sometimes we do with the passage of time. (we don't mean to forget though).

I hope that their family and friends have found at least some measure of peace and comfort with the passage of time.

Got home from work and found a surprise that my girlfriend had made for me hanging on the wall in my office.

Yeah, she is pretty special.:cool

The patch was made and sold by someone at OPD. We picked up a couple at the OPD motor competition in 2009. I have had mine on my office wall at work since then. She did this with the one she bought. She knew what today meant, and I was very happy to see this on the wall at home.
