The mayor here in SF, made a PSA on their efforts to catch these riders, blowing more tax payer millions, using drones and Flock safety ALPR cameras. A private company contracted by most police departments in the entire country. These cameras seemingly installed over night on most streets/intersections, track your vehicle type and license plate to a specific location down to the second. They also sell that information to data brokers without our consent.

Regardless of your feelings on these “stunt riders” and sideshow activity, think twice before celebrating this kind of action. It is a dangerous precedent to set for all of our freedom and privacy. There has to be a better way than continuing to selling ourselves out to tech giants and creating even more of a dystopian nightmare.

Barf folks, be on the lookout:

I agree with the premise 100%. :thumbup

They have lots of other tools and camera's are not going to pick up LP's on dirt bikes etc.
Plus some good videos of trying to capture those guys would be entertaining.

The City is taking occasional heat from the frustrated public.
The City has no clue what to do.
So, the City announced this.
That way they can say something's being done, even when it isn't.

Hmm, I hadn't heard about these cameras. I guess folks are already up in arms over the potential (or actual occurrences of) data being shared with the feds without proper procedures which I would guess would be a warrant.

for the privacy people, LPR cameras are just regular cameras. It's the image processing software that picks out the plate and reads the characters.

so...........

If I take the images that were lawfully gotten from the LPR cameras and instead of using image processing to pick out plates it was looking for:

Biden Harris bumper stickers
Harris Walz bumper stickers
Trump 2028 bumper stickers
Mexican Flag window decor
FSM Logos

You, know...whatever indicators of a certain political, religious, or lack there of identifiers we voluntarily put on ourselves. Then there is a significant layer of info about individuals as well as areas to add to the big scary database

They are 582 Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras installed all over El Cerrito, Berkeley & Oakland at stop signs from a company called Flock Safety. The official statement is that they are for law enforcement to enhance safety and solve crimes, with footage deleted after 30 days, though the data (plate #, make, model & color of vehicle) is saved for analysis. While the CVC does not permit stop sign enforcement cameras for citations, they are specifically tracking vehicles through neighborhoods to analyze "traffic flow". Hmm..

EDIT: 'Flock' cameras:

To add onto the Flock stuff they are working on a “ predictive crime AI algorithm” based on people being out of their normal routes in town and such.

When I walked in tonight I Saw a 1/2 dozen dirtbikes in captivity on the news tonight. I think it was SF.

Quickly changed it because not a fan of the news in general.

If I gotta pay for registration and insurance to ride my bikes they should too and ride street legal bikes.

Criminals are gonna criminal.
Youth are gonna youth.

After watching groups like this wheelie down Valencia, in front of the Mission SFPD station, over and over again, I am on the flip side of this. I admire their skills and am happy to see them out there having a great time. Not the same for things like sideshows, but maybe there's a way to cooperate with these riders as well as the Dolores St hill-bombers. It is more important to work with them than arrest and create criminal records for them.

During the enforcement operation, officers seized six dirtbikes, four of which were stolen from different cities, according to the San Francisco Police Department. An All-Terrain Vehicle was also taken in by the department.
Four people were taken into custody — two on suspicion of possession of stolen motorcycles and two on suspicion of driving without a license and registration, police said. The latter were cited, according to police, although it's not clear if they've since been released.

I know our occasional myopic view of things provides some us with a feeling of allegiance with these people, but...
Most of those bikes actually belonged to someone else. Supporting these guys, or even looking away with a "kids will be kids" grin, is essentially rewarding bad behavior and applauding bike theft.
Based on some of the torches and pitchforks I've seen on here regarding any given Barfer's stolen moto, we seem to be a little inconsistent in our judgement of others.
Just my :2cents

when you're out in public you have no privacy. your license plate is out in public: anyone can go ahead and take a picture of it if they want. these Flock people just go a step (or few) further: they store the information and then analyze, etc.

you're being tracked, everywhere you go.

I hate it.

Your cell phones pinging away at every tower are tracking you, as well as the apps on your phone, & are selling all kinds of data completely unrelated to what the app does way more than these cameras are.. These are just another layer. But fuck selling any data.

Fuck thieves FULL STOP. :mad

These kids roll through North Beach at least once a week. Most of the time I just think it's more of our SEE ME performative BS culture we have going. Wow you did a wheelie. :rolleyes I'd be more impressed by a college scholarship or a cure for cancer. :applause

But when they are wheelieing through the bicycle lane I'm riding in, in the opposite direction & all I can think of is kissing the underside of that hot motor coming at me at 40 miles an hour FUCK THEM. Set the drones out on them, confiscate the bikes & PROSECUTE.

BARF likes to say "take it to the track". These kids should at least take it to a park with few people but then they wouldn't be seen, so FUCK THEM.
