Today is the day, no really not an April fools joke, the lunch is scheduled for 6:24 PM Eastern Standard Time today.

My thoughts are:
1. No one cares. Like, at all. I think I am one of the biggest space nerds here and I had no Idea today was launch day. There is almost zero excitement about this mission. I have my thoughts to why but, I'm curious what everyone else thinks about it.

2. I don't feel like there is a high probability of success here. I think we will be lucky to have the crew come home safe. My gut feeling is that corporate contractors who are beholden to a corporate board will not have the safety culture in place to do a big mission like this successfully. I hate to spread bad juju about it but, I have an uneasy feeling and echoes of Challenger and Columbia are hard to ignore. I sincerely hope I'm completely wrong.

3. I really hope this mission is something we can all cheer about when the crew comes home. I win for the USA would go along way right now. :flag

I am a space cowboy too. Live coverage here:

Not a fan of pooping in one of those suits though. :laughing

i too had no idea this was happening
there is rather a lot going on in the world right now, not surprised that events happen off-world are drowned out

i seem to recall hearing anecdotal reports that the lunar mission modules smelled rather foul when they returned. i expect that the occupants didn't notice it till that door opened, or at least for their sake i hope they didn't notice

Looks like NASCAR team members have been sent to prep the Artemis team.

Cold war space race nationalism and pride was real in the 1960s for a real first in exploration...... we did it, and what was really gained except a self-pat on the back and old glory getting a photo op on the moon (or in a movie set!!?)

now, it's not really seen as an amazing first of its kind feat, since it was already done over 50 years ago, just a re-hash.

Why?

Also, since the idea that nations and corporations are just looking for mineral extraction opportunities, it's kind of makes it all, gross.

I’ve been excited about this one for awhile. I see many pros and cons but hold out hope for some advancement of knowledge. First Canadian! Woot, woot!
All new vehicle, kinda an expensive test run. 80% favorable weather. 🤞🏾

Side note, Space X announcing it's going public before the launch is not making me feel any better about this. If Artemis fails, The market will see Space X as the only viable replacement to NASA and that will send the stock price to, sigh, to the moon. That feels like a hell of an incentive to have Artemis fail. I hope I'm just being paranoid.

We can build all the rockets and space hardware we can come up with, but humans aren't really capable of surviving in microgravity for more than a year without consequences.
That is the real roadblock to space exploration and humans becoming interplanetary.

But if our corporate overlords and oligarchs find they can extract quadrillions of $$$ from space, it will find a way to be done.

I think they will be sending Androids not humans. Get shit set up and send humans to Mars or wherever after the droids have gotten shit done.

And yeah.. I have to believe that grabbing shit to make $$$ is a big part of the end game.

IDK, what's the point?
soapbox:

I think we as a species are wanderers and explores. I think gaining knowledge about the universe for its own sake is enough of a reason to spend time and resources doing it. I think our society benefits from space exploration and I want to live in a society that puts our human energy into more than just making a buck. I know that is a tough sell when we have so many day to day problems home on earth. I also think we can solve more than one problem at a time if we really do our best and try to. Basically, I think everything Carl Sagan said about us is true and I think it would be rad to live in a world where his visions for the future were a reality.

More resources/land nationalistic hegemony, always was/always will be. Ironically many scientific advancements have been garnered. Like fake diamonds, amirite?

So this ISN'T for "making a buck"?

I don't think the Artemis mission is about making a buck, exactly. I think Space X going public (it would be in their best $$$ interest for NASA To fail wouldn't it?) Is about making Musk a trillionaire.
