South Dakota plated dirtbikes registered to CA address?

There are military folks in California? I thought Feinstein and Boxer had evicted them all.

If someone has a military ID couldn’t they get away with this?

Yes and no.

If you're military and you have a vehicle with out of state plates registered to an out of state address, you're fine.

You can't have an out of state plate with a California address operated in California.

there is only one exempton for a legaal ca resident to have a car/truck/bike/boat/etc, registered in another state.

you must have a legal address in that other state. with a place to park said. and be able to prove it to ca.
also said must be parked there at least (7) seven months of the year. --provable--.
but get caught in ca a couple times in one year (visual or on a camera) and your toast.

funny, Saturday I bought a SD plated dirtbike. tomorrow I'll be trying to transfer the plate over.

CHP passed me on the freeway as I was riding it (within half an hour of purchasing it), nothing happened.

There are 2 big concerns for doing this:
1) if the DMV catches you they can black list your bike

2) if the cops catch it, they might be able to impound the bike as not being registered and in some counties that can be a $400 tow and $100+/day storage with a mandatory 30 day storage...

IMO, the best approach to this is to register the bike as being owned by a relative in another State at their address. If you are ever hassled then you can rightly claim it is not legally owned by a California resident and take your hooligan ticket and suffer the consequences without putting the bike at risk.

It went well. Ended up having to go to CA DMV (rather than just the private inspector) because the bike had previously had a green sticker. I had the VIN verification done by a private inspector though.

The woman at DMV acted surprised that I wanted a plate. She asked me if it could go on the freeway. I told her that I took it on the Bay Bridge that morning. She gave me a plate. I suspect she saw something on the screen about "off highway vehicle" and didn't know quite what that meant, but I don't know for sure.

total cost was $45 for the inspection (had it not been previously CA registered he'd have been able to give me a plate etc and it'd have been $75 I think), and then the typical tax etc to DMV.

Arizona has done that too, as an extension from the quad/ATV/side x side registration, on to bikes.
Although any other 4X4 (Jeep) doesn't use the off road tag due to weight limits in the fine print.
I feel that is unfair, a street legal vehicle should have all access to any state, county, fed road without any extra taxes.

As to SD, my registration is paid to the county directly, not parceled out like Ca does, the state pays some to the county eventually.
DMV office handles the drivers license only.

I know this is an old thread, but since I moved to Utah and have started riding in Arizona I researched the Arizona OHV tags for regularly registered motorcycles (not off road motorcycles with the street legal registration which is different than a regularly registered motorcycle). I found the wording on several sites seemed to indicate that the OHV decal / tag was not required for them, and found one site (AZ state parks) that provides good clarity: https://azstateparks.com/ohv

It states that it is not-required for dual-sport motorcycles:

Nonresident OHV Decal

As of Sept. 1, 2019, the state requires nonresidents operating an OHV within Arizona to purchase a nonresident OHV decal.

  • The nonresident OHV decal costs $25 (plus a processing fee)
  • The decal must be purchased prior to riding an OHV within the state
  • Is valid for one year from the date of purchase
  • Decals are not transferable between OHVs . Nonresidents with multiple machines must purchase additional decals
  • Decal must be displayed left rear quarter panel of OHVs with/ three or more wheels, or on the left fork leg of two-wheeled vehicles
  • Decal not required for dual-sport motorcycles or 4x4 vehicles

Thanks for that clarification.
I was unaware of this when I was registered in Az. until I noticed the extra tax stamp OHV
This is when I moved to SD, didn't pay any attention to it.
So, I'm looking to move back to Az. and was wondering about that extra tax.
I've seen so many dual sports and street bikes with the extra, it didn't make since.
This info explains, it is also voluntary tax pmnt.
