I have a 10 year limit on rear tires, max 2 on fronts. Yeah traction control.

Schrodingers 4X4, it's either stuck in the mud or it isn't. We won't know till we try to get it out.

I'm back from two weeks in Japan. I lived there back in 2006 and have been returning annually for the last five years or so. Rented a car again on this trip and was able to drive some pretty darn good stuff. There are so many great moto roads; lower speeds but rad if you're into really tight twisties. Not nearly as many bikes compared to when I lived there before... and even that was post-peak where buying bikes and cars was a cultural staple hobby of sorts. Would have been incredible to be there in the mid 90s, no doubt.

Lots of cool bikes. GB350, which we sadly don't get in the USA... Might rent one of these for a week when I head back in Spring. That or else a little Trail 125 (Hunter Cub). Saw a couple old bikes - nice FZR sitting here rotting under an old cover. Drove past another 'bike boneyard' and could have spent hours looking at everything. Little Cross Cub as well as the infamous Shirobai on display at a fall festival. Found a MotoComp on the street, too! Rad.

I also swung by the Shoei Gallery in Yokohama. All of the big ones off a personalized fitting experience. Tokyo was booked solid for weeks and Yokohama had appointments available every day, so I said screw it and headed down there. Anime and Marquez greeted me as I went up the escalator.

Shoei offers either the PFS (Personalized Fitting System) where they'll take measurements of your head and add padding to compensate so that your head fits a specific helmet's internal EPS liner shape. That service is now included in the generic 'buy a helmet from the Gallery' experience. Or.. you can pay a little extra (approx 4000円?) and you can get the 3D PFS, which includes base measurements and then a 3D scan of your head. Your head is mapped and a laser cutter is used to build up specific padding shapes to match your skull to a specific helmet model and size. There is a caveat and it's that most helmets in Japan are more round/oval. The Shoei helmets built for the west are more of an intermediate oval. If you use this service in Japan, you're going to be matched to a Japanese style shell. I waffled a bit on this but said screw it and went for the service regardless.

I've been riding a lot of ADV stuff lately and opted for a new Hornet ADV 02. These are out in Japan and Europe but not quite in the USA yet. Whereas I'd normally wear a medium/large, I was fit to the JP large and we built up some padding to take up those gaps. You can see the clearance in the scans where we added a little material on the sides and top but the front/rear ended up being a fairly perfect fit. As per their advice, helmet liner material will always break in a little bit and those clearances were A-OK.

Overall, fantastic experience. The staff in Yokohama couldn't speak english but that was fine because I speak enough Japanese to where I only had to translate a couple of new words over the ~1 hour experience. Not a problem. If you do want English support, book in Tokyo as they have some dedicated staff.

Warranty support is only in Japan. I'm not really concerned. Very satisfied with my new white Hornet.

Here's a blurb about the 3D PFS. Not sure this is out in the USA yet but.. I can say that this Hornet is probably the best fitting helmet I've ever had. I'm off for a ride :)
