Trip to Mono Lake?

Yeah... although when I rode it just 2 months ago, it was freaking SNOWING up on Sagehen Summit.

Thanks for your comments.

I'm going to do this trip next Saturday (assuming the forest fire is resolved and air quality is decent).

It's going to be hot, but I don't want to wait until September when it's not all that much cooler anyways. Plus I want more daylight hours, more predictable weather, and I'm hoping that there'll be less people due to this fire... maybe.

I plan to ride thru Yosemite and take 120 to Mono Lake. On the way back, I want to stop in Yosemite NP valley to do more sightseeing, grab something to eat, and detour to Glacier Point (if time permits).

Currently thinking:
7AM leave bay area
12PM arrive at Mono Lake
3PM arrive at Yosemite valley
5PM leave Yosemite NP
8PM back in bay area

If I get to Mono Lake earlier than 12PM, I'm going to give 120 west of the lake a try. Hopefully, I'll be able to take some decent pictures of my first extended MC ride. Really just want to see the lake in person and I don't have very high expectations.

a good photo op for you would be to head north on 395 just a bit to the top of the grade. There is a scenic overlook there where you can take in the wonderful view of the lake and the surroundings.

Nice sweeper for the bike too...can handle well into 3 digits :rolleyes

Have a good trip! :ride

120 in Yosemite is very slow - there are low speed limits, plenty LEO's (yes with radar sometimes) and waay too many slow lines of cars following RV's. It takes way too long and is not fun in the peak season - now.

I always take 108 over and then 89 to 4 or 88. Chery Lake road is one of the best in the the country.

Beat me too it. I won't ever go through Yosemite again...108 or 4 are MUCH nicer.

While Norcal and wsmc are right about Yosemite NP, 108, 4 and Cherry Lake Rd... I still go through Yosemite/120 once or twice a year. I don't mind the low speed through the park so much, because I am usually looking for pictures while going through it. It's also nice to know that Whoa Nellie/Tioga Mart (stop there for lunch!) is waiting on the other side of Tioga Pass. However, I would advise not coming back through the park again as well -- it will just make a long day, much longer than necessary. Take 108 back, you will love it. Ah, also, the earlier you get out of Bay Area, the better. Heading out of the door at 5am is not too early, you'll beat the mid-day crowd at the park ;)
