Tesla Model 3: End of the Internal-Combustion Engine?

Njoy your appliances. My car makes these noises.

So going back to the actual title of this thread, as long as ICE cars can make noises like this organically, no EV, Tesla or otherwise is truly going to completely replace the ICE.

IT sucks...I've got one of those soft rev limiters on The V. 3K is max and man it sucks...Why have HP at all?

Yeah, both aren't currently available to the public... but you can assume that the Tesla will actually have an interior when it's delivered to customers...

...from a model X, Model 3 and some bits from the Roadster. Whatever they had at the time that would glue to the floor and door panels!

Kinda sounds like ricer popping.

If I was driving a gutted Civic with a straight pipe, then yeah it sounds dumb. When those sounds come from a 772hp purpose built supercar, then somehow it sounds great. Double standard, but I don’t care.

Muscle cars didn't used to sound like that

Manufacturers only recently started with continuing to inject fuel on overrun to induce the pops. In rare occasions, you’ll actually see fire from the tailpipes. Absolutely no performance benefit from this other than maybe you burn a calorie or two from all the giggles you get.

Pro tip: nudge it into neutral while still rolling at some speed and smash the gas pedal. Good obnoxious fun under an overpass or in a parking garage.

Tried it...I had to come to a complete stop before it would engage the gears again. Thanks Cadillac....(and thanks for the tip :) )

Oh you have a electronic shifter in that thing don’t you? I have a proper shift handle mechanically connected to the A/T in my whip. Two different behaviors going to N at speed.

When I'm down your way I'll buy you coffee...to see the ZR1 in person.

To clarify, the Model S lapping Laguna at 36 was not gutted. It was even a 7-seater :laughing and for some reason it had a Model 3 sterling wheel - that wheel is nice and small. I look forward to the production version of the car with the drivetrain upgrade.

What does sound really good is the newer Hemi in the Challenger/Charger and the coyote mustang GT

Gotta give Tesla props for the Model 3 crash results. Only the second EV to get a top safety pic from the IIHS (Etron is the other). Watching the videos, the Model 3's performance in the front overlap tests is pretty amazing.

To clarify, the Model S lapping Laguna wasn't a production car, it was a prototype containing a next gen powertrain and a prototype chassis, very possibly on a non-production spec alignment and track tires. And on top of all that, it was not a verified time.

So it's not a 'record' in any way. It's just more Musk half truth. Just take a current top of the line Model S and run it around Laguna and the Ring and lets see what the times say. It wouldn't be hard to do either, but then that would be living in the real world, and Musk doesn't like to spend much time there.

Well technically the Tesla is also "official" since Musk announced it will go on sale next year.

Neither one is sold yet, although you'll be able to get the Porsche sooner.

Nonsense, it's not official in any way shape or form. Not just because the Tesla isn't a production car, but because it appears to have been running a prototype chassis and track tires. In order to be a production car record, the car has to be in production spec, i.e., the same car you can buy off the production line, with an alignment that can be achieved in stock form. The Model S had none of that. It's very possible that a year from now, Tesla will release a supercar version of the Model S that has all that, but that's pure speculation and it means nothing in terms of 'records' today. Musk is just making shit up, as usual.

This is the equivalent of Porsche taking a prototype 911 GT3 and running it around the track and then bragging about how it's faster than the competitors for its current 911S.

Put the thing in a real race and let's see where it finishes. That's rules compliance AND endurance. Racing is the be-all/ end-all for performance discussions, IMO.

Comparing the Tesla and Porsche times, currently, is like the Gas Monkey vs Roadkill drag race that happened a few years back.

Yeah but it’s like the difference between a “full size” poodle barking, and a Cane Corso barking. Both might be just “barking dogs” to most people but to anyone who remotely knows dogs, you’re gonna be a hell of a lot more respectful of the noise the Cane Corso is making vs the poodle.

A person enjoys the hp experience and then as something that comes secondary, they start to love all the things associated. We see it all the time with dirt bikes when someone fell in love with riding in the 2t era vs the 4t era. Impress the shit out of a hp junkie with something electric and they'll come to love the sounds that come with it.

Wasn’t there a ‘ring replica being built in Arizona or something? Seems to me that Musk should dump some funding into that and use it for US based testing all he wants.

For the Plaid pre-production prototype at Laguna, I bet they took a engineering mule and dropped in a drive/suspension unit like below. The drive motors are either Model 3 or like the Model 3 motors. The unibody Chassis was probably not modified a lot, maybe some stiffening. The idea is that minimal changes are done and Tesla is not that far off from production and the real production record no matter how much the dead hose is beat. :cool
