TV Shows I am enjoying …and Movies

understatement of the year. you can also include Invincible in that statement.
At the source, most comics incorporate really adult content that could be classified as "Not for children". The vast majority of movies and shows that are based on comics leave out a LOT of content to keep things at a PG-13 level because if they were true to the comics, almost all of them would rated R without any question.

Just for example, in the Batman Animated series, they went from Dick Grayson's Robin to Tim Drake and totally skipped the Jason Todd story between them because the show runners decided the Joker brutally beating the shit out of him and killing him was not something they wanted in the show.

Another one, in Iron Man 2, they depict Tony Stark drunk one night but it was his birthday so whatever. What they will never do in a movie or show is the Demon in a Bottle story where Tony is a raging alcoholic and James Rhodes has to take up the mantle of Iron Man. Yeah, real child level content that was.

It's only recent times through streaming services like HBO Max, Amazon, etc that we get comic based shows and movies that are full on adult level stuff. But all of that stuff already existed unfiltered in paper form for decades.

Sorry... nerd things. I've read a lot of comics since I was a kid.

Good historical post Kuro. All of those are great storyline material too, which is sad it gets left out.

It's understandable. The comic movie/show in a watered down version has been a huge money maker. I remember one issue of Batman, he's beating the shit out of a drug dealer in a strip club. Very child friendly content that was... Don't get me wrong, I like most of comic based movies. When I was a kid, I begged my dad to take me to the theater to watch Spawn, starring Michael Jai White... A legit martial artist and at that time I was coming up learning karate so a black guy martial artist in a comic book based movie was something I had to see. And of course I own 4 volumes of the Spawn comics that are much more violent than movie or the show on HBO in the early 90s.

It's something that I love and hate. Anytime any movie is in theaters or streaming that is based on comics, I have friends that don't understand some things and ask me questions because they know I know what I know. So it's often like, get a glass of water, or coffee, or beer, or whatever, and I'll break it down for you.

I'll stop with the nostalgia.

Yeah, there can't be anything less appealing to a GF than when there's talk about the back stories and the 1 off stories for a comic character in the movie being watched. It's when the eyes get really glossy that you know you've jumped the shark.

Watched Barbie for the first time.

Some funny moments but not really a hit for me.

The wife liked it though.

Rocky needs his own movie.
Yea, Rocky was fun.

What's interesting is that most of the Rocky on screen was a practical puppet effect (they painted out the puppeteers of course). I assume they CGId the ball he was in and such, but the character itself was a puppet. So, Ryan wasn't talking to a stuffed animal or a tennis ball for hours.

The Boys is without any question, NOT for children.
Same, we just started watching it.

Also, Vikings.

vikings wasn’t all bad, but the lead male character was a complete and total asshole. if i was his wife, great lay or not, i would’ve stabbed him in the chest with a pitchfork.

Simply put, despite them be greatly romanticized, they were in fact horrible people in general.

Saw One Battle after Another,

thoroughly enjoyed it. Great performances from DiCaprio, Penn and Toro
Just watched that yesterday.

I was lukewarm on it for the first 30 minutes but then it took off.

Loved that car chase at the end; it was quite original.

I can see why Sean Penn won an Oscar for his role.

Supposedly he is a real asshole in real life but that came through loud and clear on screen.
