Bought a House - Moving to Concord. Crazy!!

Yes for sure get that gas water heater replaced before you become an involuntary eco-terrorist.

No joke, they are way better
Curious whether the reduction in CO2 from eliminating gas water heaters is greater or less than the CO2 generated from the increased energy consumption of heat pump units.

nobody ever want to account for electricity generation emissions as they all want to assume it comes from non-hydrocarbon burning sources to make their arguments look better.

It's crap. It was MANDATORY I get flood insurance and maintain as long as I have the long. Flood insurance for concord? That's $700 a year gone. Thanks FEMA.

I promise I wont start another thread about the renovation experience BUT holy crap the checks and card swipes already. $4k just to remove insulation from the attic?? Gotta get other bids. Really tempted in doing that myself. Planning to install hardwood in the family room myself, 280sqft. Tile the hall bathroom too. Can't do the electrical - new panel, sub panel in garage, future stuff for possible pool and solar. Last time I did house work was 2 summers ago and it was only bathrooms. This is another level already. Even vanities for bathroom, 68" and 72" long....daaaammmnnn. Carpet for master bedroom, $1900 installed for 288sqft.

So.....who's gonna subscribe to my onlyfans feet only page?

Maybe don't tackle everything in short order.

Attic, family room, bathrooms, bedroom? Slow down and do a little at a time. It's never going to end so pick a pace you can live with for the long game.

Technically it depends on the source of electricity for full count, but in CA, the energy is almost exclusively clean (renewable or Nuclear) so the answer is an overwhelming yes.

Looks like the house I grew up in.

My parents paid 30 something for it brand new in 1964.

Congrats...
Too bad it's in Concord...right?
Also...Hopefully work isn't too far...
Also also...Seriously...congrats

Now...tear all that greenery out and do your part to save water.

:teeth

If you decide to go tankless...don't skimp.
Also...that's a huge roof...Talk to an expert about heating your water on the roof...
Where the solar panels should be going...
Pool in the backyard?

$4k just to remove insulation from the attic??
I'll do it for 3K...One day...Spotless

Serious business.

When was the house built?
Any asbestos?
Roof looks newish.
4 bedroom?
Square feet?
Is the garage floor sealed?
House is NOT on a slab?

So many questions...

:teeth

About a third of our energy is produced by natural gas, and a small portion of our imported energy is produced by coal and natural gas plants. Interestingly, the single remaining nuclear plant in CA produces almost 10% of our electricity, and the state is trying to close it by 2030 :facepalm

We need new reactors.

If there's asbestos you'll need to involve an asbestos remediation company that specializes in this stuff. It's dangerous to remove without the proper techniques and precautions.
It isn't cheap but you have a family to consider.

That is weird did you check and even see if you are in a flood zone? I would try and dispute it. I am waiting for my neighbors appeal to FEMA to play out due to him building up his house pad he is techinically no longer in a flood zone for his house. If he can get it approved I am going to make the move also and that will be lilke 1K+ a year I save.

If you need a local reliable source, I'm pretty sure our guy does residential too. 1 man show, good rate/ work.

There's some really nice areas in Concord, if you know where to look. A few are nicer than even Walnut Creek.

It is more like a quarter is from Natural Gas, with absurdly militant scrubbing standards. Agreed, this Country needs to go hard into nuclear energy, especially in the AI Mega Data Center era, but the net of the question being the carbon count of Heat Power Electric conversations vs Natural Gas, the data shows an overwhelming Yes.

Further investing to use the heat pumps for your HVAC has similarly strong returns, but if you use it to add cheap cooling you didn't have before, it isn't apples to apples.

Using in house solar with batteries to power the system turns it into a gold mine for your operating expenses as well.

Regarding solar, if you want to go a little cheaper skip getting the battery backup. We installed solar 3 years ago after paying $500-$600/mo PG&E bills in the summer and our electric bill has dropped to almost nothing each month.
I was a Nazi about turning off lights and not running the AC so much. Now I don't care, what a relief.

We still want to get a storage battery but they aren't cheap and something always comes up that's more important.
