ADV/DS ride Lake Berryessa/Knoxville OHV/Rayhouse Rd.

I had to move a fallen tree that blocked the trail. Now it's easily passable. I can't believe I've never been on Rd 40. It was awesome.
 
Cool, no problem with the gate on Hwy 16 right?
 
Hi, is somebody going tomorrow even though it is mother's day?
I have some off-road experience (mainly flat dirt) and know the location, but never tried most part of knoxville and any part of rd40, so I'm glad if I would have some buddies.

Yes, definitely.

I went there alone in Sun afternoon and could pass from west to east, but slipped down one time and almost a couple of times, so very appreciated if I have some buddies for safety.
It is a little bit challenging, but good practice for me, so love there.

Berryessa Knoxville/Reiff Rd. update since the County fire

I rode up today to check out fire damage and found both roads open and mostly without problems. The first 8-10 miles of Berryessa Knoxville was burned on the east side only. It looked like backfires intentionally set as firebreaks with mostly grass and brush burned and a few trees.

After the first 10 miles there was no more sign of fire. Also no sign of fire damage for the entire length of Reiff Rd. all the way to 16. And a dozer had gone the whole way (likely by firefighters to ensure access) so the major road problems were fixed. :thumbup There are still lots of ruts but the worst are filled along with the washed out culvert and the slide on the east side.

But about a mile before the zero ton bridge I came across this giant oak tree fallen across the road. I went to the left and down an embankment to get around it. It might be a little tricky riding east to west on a big bike, but not too bad.

I would be interested in joining the group tomorrow. Is anyone else planning on attending? I did this once before in December.
 
It's not the usual weekend, but I totally want to go tomorrow. No obligations and pretty good weather.
 
I hit this yesterday. Pretty ride.

Google did not take me on Knoxville Devilhead. I feel cheated.

Knoxville Rd is more patches and potholes than road, and seems to be slipping off to the downhill side in many places.

All stream crossings were unsurprisingly dry.

Was surprised by a rider on a bike more appropriate for the OHV area overtaking me. I allowed his polite beep to distract me, and my front wheel washed out in the drylubed gravel (the dust is powdery and dry). Left mirror mount broke off. Replacement clutch lever clamp isn't too expensive, but you never notice how much you look at a mirror until it isn't there.

The powdery parts of the trail are slippery. The back wheel was floating, and I was staying loose, but a few times, I swear God was driving the bike because my accidental throttle blips drifted the back at just the right time to keep me on the line I needed.

Fun. Pretty. I won't do this alone on a heavy ADV again.
 
I went through Reiff Rd last year for the first time, and I was apprehensive at every blind turn (essentially all of them) that another vehicle would be coming from the opposite direction; I did not have much fun.

Is there an unwritten rule that Reiff Rd is only traversed in one direction (West to East) and not the other?

Definitely not, people start at either end and sometimes turn around and reverse course. ATV's and trucks run that road also. Just slow down for blind turns. I feel much more vulnerable on blind paved road turns where speeds are way higher to say nothing about the damn deer and turkeys!

I have minimal dirt experience, but now that my WR has a big enough tank I'll have to try this sometime
 
I spoke to the BLM and Knoxville is open. Might trailer up the XR to Pope Canyon intersection, and putt around Knoxville... Sat or Sun
