Titus’ Ride Notes for Aug 11 2nd Sunday ADV/DS Ride
All - tried to condense the key messages re what you need to know.
- See master thread for more information
- Except for KSU time, all times are approximate
- As always, this is an informal ride, you are responsible for yourself
ROUTE PLAN
- KSU: 9:15am PROMPTLY from Cordelia Starbucks
o gas is available next door , get it when you arrive
- Head North on Suisun Valley Rd turns into Wooden Valley Rd, Right on Rt-121 to Left on Rt-128 Cappell Valley Rd to Right on Berryessa Knoxville Rd. Stay on Berryessa-Knoxville Rd.
- First STOP: 10:30am - Eticuera Creek Parking lot – 43miles - quick break
o NOT STOPPING at bridge stop – Eticuera is 5 miles farther, on the right
- 2nd STOP: 11:00am – South Entrance to Knoxville OHV – air down, gear up for dirt
o Organize into groups for dirt: small/fast, medium, and big/slow
- 3rd STOP: Big Oak Tree @ end of jeep trail/intersection with Morgan Valley Road, ~10miles
o Break, Assess, and Regroup
- Make L onto Morgan Valley Rd, ride 1.3 miles, then make R onto Rieff Road
o Make sure all of your riding group makes the turn onto Rieff
o ENJOY the next ~16miles!
o Will be hard work at times; ride your ride, stay hydrated, take breaks, and don’t be afraid to say uncle if it’s too much – we’ve all been there; stay with your group and communicate – don’t forget to ENJOY the RIDE and the SCENARY
o Bail out is to turn around and backtrack down to Morgan Valley Rd.
- End of the ride: @ Rayhouse Rd/zero ton bridge; next to Cache Creek Regional Park on Hwy16
o ETAs anywhere from 1pm (real fast) to 4pm
o Lunch stop here: option to ride into Brooks (Cache Creek Casino) for gas, and eat at the convenience store, has chairs/tables outside and you can buy “food” there; there are also some restaurants in the small towns along Hwy 16
o River is accessible for a quick dip to cool off!
- Your riding choices from here are:
o Slab: Take Hwy 16 South (Gas in 23miles @ casino) -> 505 South -> 80 East; 68 miles back to Cordelia and then home from there
o Dirt: Turn around and ride Rayhouse-Rieff backwards to Morgan Valley Rd, and then retrace back thru Berryessa to Cordelia – real hardcores repeat thru Knoxville, wheelie the whole time
s
o Slab, goaty and twisties: Take 16 North to 20 East to 53 South to Lower Lake (34miles, gas in Lower Lake), then Left on Morgan Valley Rd and retrace back thru Berryessa to Cordelia - highly recommend this
o Ride with a partner if you’re riding the dirt back
Cliff Notes on THE RIDE:
o First 43 miles is wonderful straights and twisties, through farmland, vineyards, foothills with oaks all around, and then along side Lake Berryessa – enjoy it…it’s awesome!
o Next 15 miles is goaty/twisty single-lane, with some water crossings (dry now)
o First Dirt section: approx. 10 miles of jeep trail in Knoxville OHV – big bikes air down at entrance; this is the easier of the two dirt sections, we rejoin Morgan Valley road at the end of this section; good bail out point.
o Next Dirt section starts 1.3 miles up the road, and is longer and more challenging; Rieff Road which connects to Rayhouse Road. First few miles are similar to Knoxville, but then road quality drops – lots of rocky sections, as well as ruts, and loose silt/sand/gravel. We end up climbing 2-3 ridge lines, eventually droping down into Cache Creek, so there is climbing and descending going on – and some challenging rock gardens in the middle downhill sections. As you get down to the bottom on the last descent you will reenter the wooded oak area and the road surface will improve.
GENERAL NOTES
- Plan on a full day, slower riders may not return to Cordelia area until 5-6pm.
- BRING WATER – lots of it – we are out in the boonies, it’s hot, and you’re working hard!
- Bring snacks/cliff bars etc – whatever you need to sustain yourself for a full day of riding
- street gear is okay, dirt gear is better; dress in layers, will likely be hot in the afternoon
- Bring tools if you have them – most of the regulars/veterans carry tools/spares etc…tho I’ve heard of a piece of duct tape and two wireties trading for a promissory note for a case of Lagunitas, while deep in the bowels of Rayhouse Road…
- Cordelia to Cache Creek Casino for gas is ~105 miles – make sure you have enough fuel or bring a siphon and buddy up to a big ADV bike
- Don't let anything here scare you off - this is a great group, we look out for each other, and it's a great ride with good introduction to dirt riding.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday
