Chalos Review: Service on a chill Saturday afternoon was easy and relatively quick. The Empanadas are not large, but at $6 a pop, who is crying? I expect 2-3 to satisfy most people. The choice of baked or fried is a nice touch.
Tried a mix of Ham & Cheese, Spicy Beef and Sweet Beef, all 3 were excellent, my preference is the Carne Picante (spicy beef), I can eat like 3 of those with a beer and be all good for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The crust is not overly thick and slightly flaky with a reasonable amount of protein inside. The Ham & Cheese is mostly cheese, with cubed ham, but it works. Both Carne styles I tried seem to have filling that had been long simmered in a way that kept individual ingredients from speaking loudly, but the general flavor of the mixed components are well seasoned and satisfy with pretty much every bite.
The space is relatively large for SF with different seating options and I would recommend it if you are on the West Side. Certainly I will be returning.
This is far form the only empanada shop in SF, I just selected the one closest to my house. The aforementioned Venga and Chile Lendo are also supposed to be quite good if you want a more, "downtown," experience.
