DUNE

Frank wrote the first 4 books. The rest are "co-written" by his son and Kevin j Anderson and they're hot garbage.

It's been a long time since I read God Emperor, but I remember it being a good read.

WAT

Frank Herbert wrote six books.

Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse: Dune

Everything else written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson are...not good. They also change dates and shit.

Some people are purists who only count the six books. Others are fine with the "expanded" universe.

I have got to be in a very select group of individuals. I actually liked the original movie just fine. I’ll watch the extended version/cut out scenes and enjoy that too. The original had a whole steampunk thing going on with a lot of the machines and such and I thought that was kinda neat. And I know it’s what a lot of people hate the most about it, but I liked the narration of everyone’s inner thoughts.

They built up Dr Huey’s character a lot more in the original. The new one? Huey is hardly in it, and they barely spend but a few seconds laying out why he did what he did.

The Duncan Idaho character is much more prominent in the new one (not letting Jason Momoa go to waste), which is good.

While Duncan got more time, we saw less of Thufir Hawat. Paul learned just as much from Thufir as he did from Gurney and Duncan. Yet they scaled back the brains, and focuses more on the braun.

Very odd that despite him being mentioned several times, we never see the emperor in the new one. Wtf is that?

And the new way they pronounce Harkonen? JFC what have they done!

Slow and lethargic. Some good yet inconsistent cgi, passable cinematography and the a flat cast. Read the book.

Also I, too, would have liked to see more use of the mentats. They gloss over that Thufir did provide mentat training to Paul. For anyone unfamiliar, mentats are "human computers." In the Dune universe, thinking machines and AI are forbidden. There is a lot of fleshed out lore Frank Herbert created to serve as a backdrop for the stories he's telling.

Yeah they did conveniently gloss over the fact that Paul had mentat training.

Was I the only one looking for the blood on the bulls horns?

I also wasn't thrilled with how the jumped into the Kwisatch Haderach topic so quickly when they didn't really go into it later in the book and they did a super quick oh yeah btw he will be the person that can see past, present and future all in like 3 seconds of dialog.

I was told that in the audio books, that's how it's pronounced.

I on the hand pronounced it the other way.

And for all those seemingly butthurt about things they left out of the movie, let's see how they reconcile some of that in Part 2. They could come back and explain some of those missing bits.

How do they pronounce it?

The original movie is a little slow but the visuals, set designs, costumes, etc were and are amazing.

Audio book and new movie: Har-kAH-nens.

I always said Har-kOH-nens.

I have not heard the audio book pronunciation as I've heard this second hand by several people who have.

How do they pronounce it?

Har-KOH-nen - the middle syllable has a long O sound, like saying "oh"

I don't remember much about the 1984 movie, but that was how it was pronounced in the Dune II RTS computer game all my friends were crazy about.

The pronunciation in the Denis Villeneuve film sounds closer to HARK-o-nenn with the middle syllable sounding deliberately clipped.

I expected some changes to be made for the pacing to translate to a feature film.

Just gonna put out there that I agree with whoever didn't like the new interpretation of Jessica. This one seems a little weak and hand wringy compared to my interpretation of her from the book.

TBH I thought Brad Dourif was a better Piter de Vries
