ADV/DS ride Lake Berryessa/Knoxville OHV/Rayhouse Rd.

Sounds like there were plenty of smiles all around, 'cept maybe from the CHP... I was planning on making this one, unfortunately even though my brain said yes, my body decided to sleep in :laughing

Pics

Very nice write ups!

Wow, yes, that was super-fun; thank-you guys for your kind words of encouragement, for sharing your tips and advice, the showing a noob the ropes and of course for the helping hands in a couple slippery situations.

Great teamwork! :teeth

I would certainly say that the offroad sections were Adventures that demanded most all of my attention just to stay upright, but even so I couldn‘t help but notice we were passing through some stunning scenery at this peak time of year. Beauty shots were all around us, all day long!

Sharing a few pics from one or our first pit stop, this was in the Knoxville Rec Area I believe not far from where Knoxville Berryessa turns to Morgan Valley Rd. This first foray had a few slippery rocky gullied sections, but they were fairly short. Scary at the time, but a good warm up for the Reiff Rd part, that’s for sure…this was def the easy section! The day was quite exhilarating any way you slice it, my legs still feel a lil rubbery and funny today...but in a good way :smile

Gee, looking at these pics you'd think we'd spent the day loafing in the shade by some oasis while swilling on our water bottles, but I assure you there was a fair bit of effort (and suaviteee!) involved in our ramblings.

Got some more snaps of our other stops, will post em when I can…

For those of you that did not make today's ride, I'm sorry to say you missed a good one.

There were only 5 of us, cabin cruiser, palada, sharky, NowDatsLiving and I.

Hey now..... you're forgetting me!!!!! :twofinger :teeth
Sorry I had to bail at the end of Knoxville OHV but I had "things" to do at home that afternoon.
I had a great time with this group. A high light was sliding crossed up, feet up on the pegs and heading straight for the CHP officer standing in front of his cruiser that was blocking the road just after a totally blind corner. Lucky for me he was busy harassing the riders already stopped and didn't notice me. :teeth
Note to Nicki: I waved you by because I realized that I had nothing to teach you and I was just holding you up! Way to go.....:ride

Apologies, Star Man.

You soldiered through most if the odd/irritating stuff. Sad you had to leave before the real fun started.

NTL, Thanks for the photos.

Looking forward to more.

Sounds like you folks had a great ride! Sorry I missed it. Next month will be the Sheetiron so hope to do this ride again in June in 100 degrees :laughing

How were the conditions after the gate? Same as last month or did the cars clean up the rocks debris?

Hey Dean, whatcha riding at the Sheetiron? I look forward to seeing you there (until the start, after which I won't see you again).

Hey Aaron, you're funny man. I'll be on the WR450 with dirtwheels so you . might not recognize me :teeth

Did I read that you're picking up a ktm 250 exc 2 smoker? With a PLATE!??!
I want one of those....... it should be a blast to ride but from what I hear you'll become more acquainted with your brakes since two strokes don't have engine braking compared to a 4 stroker. But, I'd be willling to use more brakes if I could shed some 50 lbs or so.

Good luck with the acquisition, I hope it goes well so we can see it in May.

More beautious rest stoppin' - like a resting BOSS

Was a nice surprise seeing ya Greg! Nice green machine too, woo-wooo!

After the park, when you calmly said your good-byes and returned to civilization, we headed off for the scrabbly, crunchity, great gritty unknown.

It's true there may have been a moment or two when I cursed myself for not joining you and easing into this at a more gentle pace. Yes, I admit that...but ya know, it all turned out just fine!

After scooting up the sweepers of Morgan Valley road a little more, we returned to the scrappier stuff, and turned onto Reiff Road on the right…it started out easy enough with lush grassy canyons and farm buildings and then a gentle rise on a dirt road, but as it climbed there were some slippery sections and I got myself stuck in a gully or two for a minute…skeeert myself when the back end hopped sideways a few times on loose rocks and ragdolled me around a bit but I managed to hang on and somehow the big girl righted herself…several times!…(WHEW…yes I said that lots this day) …there were lots of lessons to learn here.

Our pace was steady and determined tho and the terrain kept changing so a dull moment was not to be found anywhere, no where, nada!

This was more physical than street riding, that’s for sure, so taking some breaks to catch my breath, hydrate, catch the view, and make sure no more stuff fell off the bike (bungeeing a water bottle to your rack…nahhhh it won’t stay!).

We had some fussing with a locked gate, apparently put there to test our ADV-McGyvering skills. Hmmm we can go under this, over this, around this…teamwork got the job done.

Our reward was this beautiful vista alongside Davis Creek Reservoir.

Dam! That’s what we are parked on here, the road is basically on top of the berm of the dam. Gotta love your wildflowers.

Dayum! Paul’s sweet little 250 sure is sharp-looking, and nimble too… he out-danced most of us in the tricky stuff and made it look easy on this pretty thang. Yes, I imagine he was doing some graceful pirouettes or sultry samba moves after peeling away from us wrastling the rocks with our big honkers. And yeah, I think I’d rock that svelte blue cutie given the chance!

Doggone! Meanwhile, with my inseam-challenged legs and skimpy skill-set I was still finding my way around this tallish (well, to me!) loping giraffe of a bike. The assignment kept me rather entertained and oh so busy. Thanks Ray for the tire pointers...this seems to be a recurring theme to find myself on a dirt road with less-than-ideal tread. Seriously, I gotta work that out, but they worked quite satisfactorily in the rough and flew better than expected on the hiway too.

Team Knoxville ... intent on sumpin' up the road! Prolly that one more rider rounding the bend.

Another noob came rolling in! He's got jeans on in this shot, but somehow next time I looked over he is standing there with his pants rolled up (or was he in his shorts?) anywayzzzz, I glanced over and saw a coupla naked knees and I took the opportunity to put on my BARF cape for a moment and deliver the classic advice to gear up younster, we want to see those cute knees stay cute. Silly kids!

I did my best to get ahead of the pack so the rest of you couldn't see me stumbling and bumbling over the trail. :laughing

Yeah, I miss my old 2-strokes. We'll see how much of it was just nostalgia when I throw a leg over this little beast. I'm not super concerned with the bike weight; especially given that I am fat as hell. :laughing.

A WR450 is a heck of a fun street legal bike, too. Nice! If I don't see you before then, I will surely see you at the Sheetiron. :thumbup

It's a nice bike but kind of heavy for single track. A two stroke would be better for single track since it's so much lighter and I tend to fall down a lot on single track.
Are the guys that frequent the knoxville ride planning to hook up Friday night at least to say "hey" ? Camping in Stonyford on Friday is always fun. Seems the air is full of excitement and anticipation. :teeth

Good question. Not sure, to be honest. I may not be able to leave the house until VERY late Friday, as I had some plans with friends that I forgot about. Doh!

Titus would be the man to orgynize this.

Hey Tim! Are the Knoxville brethren planning a meet/greet on Friday night in Stonyford? Or should we all wander around with a empty beer cozi, plate, knife and fork, and look for your campsite? :laughing

Looks like I missed a good ride. (aren't they all good rides?)

I buttoned up the bike (replaced rear shock, airbox, install Trail Tech Vapor, etc...) by 1am...and promptly didn't wake up in time to hit the highway.

Yes to a BARF sheetiron meet & greet on Friday.

A friend and I are planning an early morning excursion to Carnegie on Sunday morning. We want to leave SF at ~7am & be back around 1pm. He's on a WR250R (oddly enough he has same bikes as Paul, F800gs as well) & I'll be on DR650 with white tank & most likely saddle bags.

Chris

I might be able to show up Sunday.

Sunday's Ride Part 3...

Part 3...

At another rest stop, would you believe?

We were pretty far along onto this road, and the only way out is apparently down the river (yeah right, it's flowing pretty good right now!) or back up the same way we came. We opted to break for lunch, re-energize and get back out before we were too far gone. It is physically demanding wrangling these big bikes in and out and over all of the early season gullies...noobs like me can get stuck a bit here and there, and with my skills shortage had to require more on experimentation to find a way to finagle my way out of a few little jams...takes a little longer, and yeah, more beads of sweat result :-D

Had we decided to continue we'd have gone along that road you see winding across the pic, another 1-1/4 mile or so and we’d have come to the end of the road at the creek. It was the right call, I got home at 6:30pm as it was...and I still had to shower get over to a party and do some hula-hoopin' and general booty-shakin’ this night!

Our lunch spot had a rather magnificent view to the ridge on the opposite side of the Cache Creek Canyon, a peek of the creek (more of a river at this time of year) is just visible in the center of this pic.

View up the hill to our lunch spot, this view from a gentler grade. We were out in some fine wilderness here, not much civilization in the immediate vicinity but we’re somewhere between Highway 16 and Davis to the east, and Lower Lake to the west.

So t-h-a-t-'s where we had our lunch! My brain has that geeky thing going on where I always want to know where the heck I am, and honestly I just had no clue! This being my first time out there, my head was working overtime just to read the ruts and rocks and stay vertical.

It's been bugging me for days, so the gps coordinates from these pics put us right at that clearing by the marker.
Well doggonit, we'd come almost to the end of the road!
Google says this is pretty close.... http://goo.gl/maps/vYdnm

If you’re already stopped, you might as well take a moment to enjoy nature’s beauty…spring blooms were all around us.
541957_321450537983050_2078971852_n.jpg

Pretty blooms above us too…
526533_321450544649716_1495180989_n.jpg

And a few to the side as well…
554244_321450497983054_800602917_n.jpg

View back up where we came down…YIPES! To me, it did look a bit daunting…but the hardest part was getting started, once you got going, you just needed to keep going, cross the gullies, pick your path really carefully, and if you got stuck, chill out and find your finesse! Ray suggested letting some air out of the rear tire and it really did help it go over and get into uneven terrain -- that gave me a nice bouncy boost for the ride back out … and gee, the ride out suddenly went by really fast! Wheeeeee!

I rode all the way down to the old campground on the river last year. It is always hard to tell from pictures, but this section looks to be about how I remember the worst. Like you say, if you keep some momentum and pick your lines carefully it really isn't that bad.

Love the flower pictures.

I may get a kitchen pass for a Sunday ride at Carnegie. Details? Anyone else? I'm not so sure about 7am on a Sunday though... (no kids :teeth)

Last minute change. Cancelled for me as I'm riding trials at a friends property up in Marin.

We'll raincheck in Carnegie with Trials bikes in 2-weeks (after Carr's Ranch event).

Highly recommend y'all hook up with MAD750 on Saturday in Carnegie.

SpeedyCorky and I will be at Carnegie this Sat, 4/20. From opening until noon. For you Sheetiron noobs I'll bring a roll chart so you can see how they work.

With back to road (facing the riding hills) we will be to the immediate left of the main gate. Silver two-door ford explorer.
