ADV/DS ride Lake Berryessa/Knoxville OHV/Rayhouse Rd.

I'll be at the 121/128 Intersection. Likely down in the parking lot @0930.

I'll be riding this:

Gimme a wave and I'll get going and join up.

Bummed :( Battery issues on one bike and a stuck float on the other have put me out of the game. Awaiting pics of all the awesome.

Likely I'm the first one home since I split off after the Rayhouse section to ride back to Davisville.

Thanks, everyone for letting me tag along.

I'll be doing it again soon.

I am home now it was a great ride for me being an old/newbi dirt rider. I have not been out like that since the 1980s. What is that 30 years.

amg epic! thanks for teaching the newb some tricks and having me come back via the dirt... also thanks for the epic save on my rotopax!

Yep, fun day...I'm a bit tired. I was having so much fun I forgot to take a single photo! Still, met some cool people and enjoyed a, uhh, "brisk" ride home with the badazz triumph. Fun times.

:rideYep, a real fun ride! Scraping the skid plate in the dirt and scraping the pegs on the road! Maybe I just need some of that stuff the KTMs have, suspension.
Oh yeah, another epic fail in the video department. 2 hours of the top of my gas tank and about 2 minutes of people passing me. Maybe next time.

Here are some of my pics

I had a great time. Here are a few pictures I took. My camera does not have as fast of a frame rate that I hoped it would, and everyone was coming to quickly to dial in the settings.

At the bridge:

It seems like this monthly ride has settled into a fun groove. The weather has cooled down and the group size has increased. Sunday's ride was more fun than usual. Why is that? Because there were more riders. Dual sporters are a slightly different breed than the typical motorcyclist. Because there is more risk involved, there's also more reward in taking your street based m/c off-road. That tends to make ADV riders a little more passionate, interesting, independent and full of life. Start a conversation with one of them and you quickly realize they all have great stories to tell.

This ride takes a few long enough breaks where you can meet and talk to your fellow dual/sporters. You'll quickly discover that they're a competent, talkative, lively and interesting bunch of riders. And that's what made Sunday's ride so much more fun for me...... and I hope for everyone else who was there.

2nd sunday

I had a BALL riding with you guys and, a big thanks to Bill & Matt for letting me tag along.

@ Excite-Bike: I hope you post photos of me siphoning fuel and getting a tow to the Casino! :thumbup

@ veriobill : Sorry I let Matt have a taste of a CA Plated 2-stroke GasGas EnduroCross 300 with Trials tires :wtf

@ olhogrider: The 270 degree exhaust note through that Arrow pipe on your Triumph Scrambler... so sweet! :teeth

@ calinative: Watching you solo man-handle your KLR650 onto your trailer without a ramp! :shocker

Saw a bit of Exotica out there: AfricaTwin, G650X-Challenge, Beta 350 RR... tons of Katooms including an ISDE and a 650 Adventure.

Good Karma.....but.....

....the universe is telling you it's time to replace that tire.

When I drove out in my car previously I got it to drift a bit through there, and this time on the bike I was sliding around those corners a bunch.

:wtf

Rounding one of those corners to find an entire car coming toward me going sideways would NOT be a very pleasant experience.

The only car I've ever seen up there was broken down.

I'll be riding Rayhouse with a bit more caution in the future.

FYI, I came across two trucks and multiple motorcycles going in the opposite direction on this ride. It's important to keep in mind weather or not the route you are on is one way, two way, OHV only, or open to all vehicles...and ride accordingly.

On my way out Sunday, I rounded a corner drifting both ends, only to see a pickup truck with three grinning teens coming the opposite direction, also sideways. We were both able to bring it down in plenty of time, but if we hadn't we both would have been at fault. :ride Most folks are out there having a bit of fun...2 wheels or four.

Was it that silver or white newer model (possibly "King Ranch" edition and crew cab) Ford truck? When I got to the end and was chilling near Knoxville Road, that truck came by me at a speed that seemed a little excessive... Later a few people commented that it's driver had given them almost no room, running some of them off the road a bit, and IIRC, causing one rider to go down. :thumbdown

Either way, I agree with your point about factoring in the possibility of oncoming traffic. Whenever I ride I'll always factor that in and adjust my speed and position accordingly, particularly on goaty backroads with poor visibility (like the roads south of the far end of Skaggs), and even more so on dirt due to reduced traction. Sure, it maybe seems overly cautious for the majority of the time when there's nobody there, but it will save you from a lot of pain if somebody driving recklessly rounds the corner and takes up most of your lane. It's just another risk vs. reward balance, and for me, I decide to be more cautious. If you don't set your speed so you have enough time to detect and respond to any threat that might plausibly be coming your way around the corner, you're setting yourself up for trouble. Of course, you can still get caged despite being careful and skilled...

I think that the truck you're referring to was a big ole maroon truck with 22's on it.

And in all honesty, we should all ride those roads like someone is coming the other way.
