Tesla Model 3: End of the Internal-Combustion Engine?

not stock :laughing

You can see the Tesla quality where the fender and flares don’t match the same red color as the rest of the car. :facepalm

Yeah, the plexiglass spoiler is a nice touch too. Still, if any of us got behind the wheel of that thing, we’d probably think it was an e-ticket ride.

if you look closely at teslas on the road its really easy to spot crazy gaps and shit between the panels. And it's not even a rare occurrence, I'd venture to say most that I see on the road will have some type of build issue :laughing

It would be cool if Tesla came out with a really high end halo type version of the Model S, but I just don't see it happening, particularly with Musk's comments last week about the Model S being basically irrelevant to Tesla's future. I also don't see it as being necessary, given Tesla's customer base, but who knows what goes on in that brain of his. My guess is insecurity drives him to an extent, and so nothing would surprise me. Just the time and money they're putting into this Ring effort has to be significant and it's all wasted money if it doesn't result in a car.

I think most Model S/X have build issues for sure. Mine was manufactured/purchased right before they began the Model 3 build and both my paint, panel gaps, etc are flawless. But the interior build quality sucks, I have random squeaks and rattles that shouldn't be present on a MSRP ~$90K car. I rode in a buddy's Lexus RX and it was flawless when it came to interior/rattles, felt kinda bad for my Tesla.

The newer Model 3s are pretty solid though.

None of this would be a problem if Tesla service wasn't a complete crapshoot and fixed things in an efficient manner.

fair enough, yeah I agree I think I mostly notice these issues on the S more than anything else. model 3s are usually pretty solid

The older Model 3 had a ton of paint/panel gap issues but they fixed it quick. All the new cars rolling off the line are flawless.

Speaking to the techs at the Tesla Service Center, they confirm that the newer Model 3s are indeed fairly well built now.

The data is moving in the right direction.

I guess if you are going to have flaws, its better to have them on the cosmetic side than actually function.

As a long time alternative energy advocate, its a chuckle to see people complaining - especially people complaining that don't even own the car - about a paint blemish rather than something specific about the 'electric' part of the car.

It's almost always people who own BMWs or Porsches who are butthurt about their own cars falling apart rather quickly after the warranty ends. :laughing

Hahahaha! Fuck BMW!!!!

Not to bash, but the Model 3s I've seen are far from solid. I've crawled all over a few of them and the build issues were the worst of any new car I've ever seen. All had panel gap issues, some had door fitment issues and a few had paint issues. And this was just the stuff I could easily see. Maybe they've improved by now, but the ones I looked at were fucking awful. I struggled to imagine how anyone accepted delivery of them and wrote the check. If I had just paid $50k for a car and that's what they gave me, I would've given them a big nope.

:laughing Except Porsches don't fall apart when the warranty ends. They run for fucking ever if you take care of them.

BMWs on the other hand...

Fun to do on the roads - look at the model X door handles since they're right next to each other. Most of the ones I've seen line up like this : _--

It's super obvious when you look at the misalignment.

edit - took me 2 seconds on google to find a pic. This one doesn't even look as bad as others I've seen on the road but you can definitely see it. Some I've seen have been off by what looks to be nearly half a centimeter or more.

For comparison's sake - this is much better aligned:

Not to bash,....

...bash, bash, bash :laughing
:deadhorse

Even the biggest Tesla basher, Bob Lutz, has at least partially reversed course after looking at a Model 3.

"But, when next to the car, I was stunned. Not only was the paint without any discernible flaw, but the various panels formed a body of precision that was beyond reproach. Gaps from hood to fenders, doors to frame, and all the others appeared to be perfectly even, equal side-to-side, and completely parallel. Gaps of 3.5 to 4.5mm are considered word-class. This Model 3 measured up."

What's a centimeter? Is that like a liter of cola?

it's something like of a hundreds, or centipedes, over a meter.

yep, exactly. That's a bit of a change from your earlier position :laughing when you said "I see no issue with the door handles". I Swear I can show you a better inside door opening handle on an older VW than on Tesla X or 3. Same plastic, silver laying-down L shape, BUT the tesla's feels as cheap as on a Chevy from Hertz.
And yes I rode in a Lexus ES after lunch having been driven there in a Tesla X and .... the ES was nicer inside. (but not electric)

That's not just the door handles, it's the whole friggin door. Look at the top (chrome) trim pieces. They're also off.

Teslas are sold solely because of their electric power trains, to people who want an EV and will put up with the rest. If you put an ICE motor in a Tesla, they'd sell worse than the Aztec.

And, as expected, it appears to be that the magical 'profit' Tesla made this past quarter was a bit of a charade built on a number of one time items and the truly sustainable, recurring margin is much, much lower. But at least revenue's growing to offset it....oh wait...
