I know a number of "car guys" who have Teslas. Something about >600HP that attracts those types

My guess is that Musk's hard on for Porsche might eventually lead to Tesla putting out a true performance oriented car, though a fast appliance is still just a fast appliance. They need to wrap a really great car with some style around that quick power train or it's just another bland nondescript car.

Funny, because "fast appliance" is an insult often thrown at modern Porsches. Obviously, the Tesla takes that to another level.

I was jokingly referring to the 919 Hybrid prototype race car that set the outright record for the Ring. The Taycan time was a pre-production car in production spec on standard street tires, and it was the Turbo model, not the Turbo S. The Model S running around the Ring is a stripped down prototype running a prototype drivetrain, as well as lowered suspension, Brembo carbon brakes, aftermarket lightweight wheels and track tires, none of which are available on the production car. A Model S didn't turn that time. A prototype Model S in track trim ran that time and it will probably run even faster when they get the track to themselves later this week. It's impressive in terms of what the next gen car will do, but you can't compare it to current production cars. It's apples and oranges. Tires alone are worth a bunch or time on the Ring.

Hey look the Porsche RSR just ran a Ring time 30 seconds faster than a Merc GTR. Yay!

So going back to the actual title of this thread, as long as ICE cars can make noises like this organically, no EV, Tesla or otherwise is truly going to completely replace the ICE.

It's important to note that comparing near-production cars to modified cars is like comparing apples to pineapples. The Taycan that set the record was running all the same hardware, software, and tires as the car you'll be able to buy at a Porsche dealer, with the addition of a safety cage and racing seat.

Tesla's test mule was seen wearing super-aggressive Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, which are not currently offered on the Model S. It also appears to have wider fenders, different wheels, and unique aerodynamic elements compared to the current highest-performing Tesla, the Model S P100D. Last week, Tesla announced that a Model S prototype testing a new "Plaid" powertrain set a lap record at Laguna Seca. Musk said in a tweet that Plaid is about a year away from production. It's unclear if the Model S at the 'Ring is also a Plaid prototype, but either way, Porsche is sure to take notice.

I'm still down with it, only difference is I'm yelling "Gran Turismooooooo!!" and laughing when I hit the gas.

Yeah, both aren't currently available to the public... but you can assume that the Tesla will actually have an interior when it's delivered to customers (the car run at the 'ring was completely stripped)... amongst other things.

True, but often enough, a nice prototype will be shown and the production car will be different.

I won't assume Porsche will make the same car as their prototype any more than Tesla would.

Neither is available to the public right now, but for some that's a reason to belittle one and not the other. Seems a bit biased.

The tesla was a mule. The porsche is official. Take that as you will.
 
Well technically the Tesla is also "official" since Musk announced it will go on sale next year.

Neither one is sold yet, although you'll be able to get the Porsche sooner.
