This is sort of scary... Software shit already is screwing us by forcing computer upgrades.
Heck they have been forcing such in so many cases.

More car manufacturers have been switching to subscriptions for some upgrades and this vid suspects software will for cars out of use so... Maybe some are already paying for subscriptions..?

Cars are next huh?? :dunno

This is actually one of the reasons we ruled out Tesla when we were shopping for a new car.
Also, it's not inconceivable in not too distant a future, that the insurance industry may charge you higher premiums to "drive" a car (instead of using a fully autonomous vehicle ) - so, a conversations such as "It was so beautiful outside this weekend, that I took the car to the track and actually drove for few laps." will not be uncommon

I hear you and only too close to home. Our Chevy Bolt came with all the bells and whistles including Supercruise. That is until about a month ago. Supercruise was only included for the first 3 years. Now we can only use Supercruise if we pay a monthly fee. It was nice while we had it but not worth what they are asking. Taking the feature away left a sour taste in my mouth.

bait and switch - classic!

Well, the majority of US residents are Urban/metro area suburban. As Autodrive becomes more and more popular, and functional, I anticipate the norm for the market will not even be to have most people own their own cars, but rather a monthly subscription to an auto-drive service. This is the near term, say the next 20 years or so.

The next phase will be the removal of humans driving on public roads as too dangerous/unreliable some 40-50 years from now. People in rural areas and the wealthy will still own their own cars with the associated monthly software updates subscribed, but will not be allowed to drive it themselves on Public roads. Self Drive hardware for human interaction will be an upcharge not even available on some models of car.

Exactly, but the logical leaps and hyperbolic language of the video are triggering emotional responses for something that has to happen, that will happen. For example, our 23 rav4 is getting over air updates already, and firmware during dealer visits. New features just appear, and they are improvements. The emails are asking, in poll form, which subs would you like to see in the future? Self-parking? Yes please. I asked the main driver if it would be worth $10 monthly to have that, she said yes, as she navigates a large public parking area at night after work. Another form of insurance.

The aging population. Boomers are not going to let go of independent transportation, and us 60s kids are right behind them with declining faculties. Auto-drive is only an update away with the CAN bus architecture already set up. The end of car chases? Yes please. Taking autonomy away from drivers that kill thousands of people annually due to carelessness? All the way. Ask EMTs how they feel.

Now imagine the market for balls-to-the-wall private tracks for motos and cars. They are dying because kids get their kicks on public streets. And insurance costs, medical costs are hard to take. Finally, imagine the saved productivity where so many work with tech for their daily human jobs. And leisure while travelling. Lots of bugs to work out, but the compute is coming, and I am for it being all up in my ride. There's a DR in the garage and lots of desert to blast around in. YMMV

This afternoon, I heard a news story about building homes in factories. It's a bill that will be pushed through the legislature, careful to advertise it would not take away from labor.

You might ask what it has to do with a car and that'd be right. But every time the government decides they know what people need, the price goes up. Things like mandated safety equipment. Imagine you get in the car afterwork one night and the car won't start because you haven't proven your fitness to drive yet or because the sensors are fucked up and cannot scan your eyes? Or the automated braking kicks in on the freeway and you get rear ended--I have adaptive cruise control and occasionally, it does slam on the brakes or worse, not sense the car in front.

Government needs to get out of this regulation. I mean look at all the Waymos that gather in the middle of the street...or drive past a closed accident scene...

:laughing

My '09 Challenger has touch screen navi, on board hard drive for mp3, and doesn't require shit for software or network connections. I will probably just maintain it forever, or until they make the gasoline illegal.

09 challenger, perfect lol, bonus points if it's yellow.

As for awful tech, my favorite is when people buy new cars and complain about the tech that they just supported by buying the car. My consumerism shall not be swayed, but damn it the internet is going to hear about it.

Not me contemplating how to keep an 07 Nissan Frontier running forever.... :laughing

If I'm lucky I won't feel the need to travel much further than my bicycle can take me when I'm in my 60's and 70's. I have zero desire for any new car. I am keeping a close eye out for a used Mazda 3 with a 6 speed though. With the price of new vehicles these days, I think almost any option other than the debt trap of a $450+/month car payment for 60 or 72 months, is a win.

Imagine buying a brand new car, then in 5 years, it becomes "End of Support" and no longer runs as the company no longer provides updates and online management to run it.

I have a '14 JGC.

I've been mulling replacing it. But I think it's really "peak Jeep" for me. I don't think they've got dramatically better since then. I do like this vehicle.

But, even then, considering all of the tech and wizardry in modern cars, it came to mind whether, should I replace it, whether I should just lease and be done with it.

Get a lease, get a solid warranty, and just do that. I don't know if a modern car is really designed to run another 10 years.

It should, the fundamentals are sound. And I don't chase the gizmos (the only real gizmo I'd like to try is "smart" cruise control -- maybe even one that works from stop and can drag me through traffic. I'll steer the thing, but the stop and go just annoys me extra).

But I dunno.

Or just do what my friend does, he buys Y2K Grand Cherokees with the 4L 6, and just keeps 'em running. "All I care about is fuel injection and electronic ignition."

All well and good, and appreciate the practicality of it. But I'm a fan of air bags and stability control, especially on these beasts.

My car works, it's been really well maintained, I have a crazy service plan for it. But, it seems to hit the shop for 3+ weeks once a year in the spring.

I dunno...just typing out loud.

I mean, at that point killdozer is the only option right? :laughing Imagine getting your title in the mail after paying off your recockulously long car loan and in the same week getting a letter from the manufacture stating that your appliance is now obsolete and won't be supported any longer. Here's an low interest rate offer on a trade in!! Definitely killdozer territory. Its 2026 and we are honestly debating the nature of "ownership." Wild.

Yup you can always buy a SxS without all the nanny equipment. Wether its legal to drive on HWY is another story. But legal and capable are 2 different things.
(same gasoline though fuel both right?)

This brings about a bigger question really. Government controlled infrastructure - such as FWY's - is already at MAX capacity in states like California and managing it will be more and more difficult so yea while you can drive the same Truck you own in TX down streets of SF, is it really going to work well in a few years... only time will tell.
Perhaps sometime soon someone will try passing laws to limit what a car is legally able to do an not (speed limits, time of use etc etc..., lease instead of own, subscription etc...) BUT until the SEMI truck is replaced for getting goods around I doubt the passenger car will be regulated that much//

The same people who willingly carry a tracking device and download apps that give constant access to your most personal information and collected data are just blowing my doors insisting that there is something wrong with your car doing much less invasive things.
If I was to complain about one thing, it would be having the car frozen in the middle of the road because I open the door to get a dropped item in the car stuck itself in park as a safety. It was nighttime on a busy road and there I was in a lane of traffic stuck and needing to cycle the car on and off, but not knowing that was a thing. Also, also being able to back up with the liftgate open, but not a door so that I could peek out and see what’s on the side better
Aside from those few niggles, this basic SUV has gone straight up a snow-covered mountain and has a 525 mile tank range and gets 40 miles to the gallon all day. All while weighing 5200 pounds or so. It is also self driving above 35 miles an hour. It goes and it stops and it holds lanes with good markings. It is a software update away from being FSD.
These are miracles of engineering and safety.

Much like a motorcycle with five axis Bosch brain and super bike brakes, it’s a nice measure of safety as we age into slower reflexes and overall faster traffic.

Technology tends to make things less expensive and if you look at the cost of cars overtime, it’s only perceived as being so much more because we buy cars so in frequently
Letting these cars talk to each other and never bump into each other because they know where they are in space is absolutely brilliant and I cannot wait for it to happen.

Killdozer is always an option

I've freaked out a few moto's as i moved over to give them space only for the car to violently jerk back over due to lane assist. I've been training to hold the wheel tighter, but it still jerks somewhat until it gives up.
