The End of Car Ownership: 2026 cars and beyond

I had one of those in for a company car back in 99 and was surprised at how sporty it felt compared to the Mitsubishi Montaro I was driving before getting the jeep.
IIRC they cam in a 2wd 4L 5 speed and that was kinda zippy for what it was. Do you remember what drivetrain was in the company car?

Yes to the aging AND, I think the strings that come attached to the new doo-dads are not worth it on the face of them. I'm not even that mad at manufactured for making cars so damn expensive. Look at all the unnecessary shit they have decided to add because their marketing people and bean counters say we want them and they will make more money including them.

Here is a fun question, would you buy a brand new car or truck from 20 -25 years ago for $20-25k? I would. I would buy a new one of these for $20K today if I could. 4L and a manual trans please.

I would buy that

I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time as I had / have 2 that that I bought new in 2007. My GMC Sierra w/ a V8 and no AFM/DFM or any other techie extras got totaled by a driver last year and have been looking for a replacement ever since. Still have my Tacoma but it has the stubby bed unlike my GMC w/ a 8'

I am not real crazy about buying a new 26' with all the potential problems but not sure what 27' will bring

I'm planning on replacing the engine in my 2013 Fit when I have to. It's at 322k miles and running very well. If I can put in a 6 spd. manual I will do that too. It's a 5 spd. and I want sixth gear if it will get me even better mileage.
If you change your transmission to a diff year. Style. your ecu might throw a code .

Yeah I would just word it differently, like its not, "...because their marketing people...", it's, "the unnecessary shit that consumers display their overwhelming desire for with their dollars of approval".

I absolutely would buy a new 20-25yo car or truck for $20-$25k!!

It was an auto. Don’t know if there was more than one auto option but I suspect not.
What I didn’t like about it was the lack of storage compartments. It had nothing but a glovebox from what I recall.

Really? The safety aspect is a concern for us. Modern cars can barrel roll down a freeway or plow a jersey barrier at speed and you'll be pretty much OK. I've seen these wrecks and someone pacing back and forth crying into their phone. Several of my HS classmates died or were maimed in a few out of school in accidents that would be 100% survivable today.

For the most part I agree at 2001, but less so at 2006.

Yep. I would drive that Cherokee without a second thought. The cheapest new pickup truck in America is the base model ford maverick for $30k. Not a bad deal really. I think they are ok. Drivetrain options are a hybrid or turbo. Neither give me great feels if I want to keep the truck for 15 years or more. So that means trade it in 4 or 5 years down the line and accept endless car payments. Nope. Im not doing that. I know what I want is never going to happen. I have a feeling I will never buy another new car and I think I am good with that.

I guess I’m the opposite guy here in this thread. I love all the fancy features. So I’m always gonna have a new car as new stuff keeps coming out. Just got another one a couple months ago actually. Not very exciting as I traded in a 23 white Acura TLX for a 25 white Acura TLX and it’s pretty much the same car. But it does have a couple of bells and whistles my 23 didn’t have. Wireless CarPlay and remote start. The latter is a thing I’ll take advantage of on super hot days to get the interior cooled off a bit before I go to the car and drive off. But wireless CarPlay? That’s a nicety I use every single time I drive it. While it wasn’t a super big deal to take my phone out and lug it in before, I gotta say that’s it’s an extra little luxury to just leave it in my pocket now.

I know some new cars are locking the electronic features behind a subscription model now, which I think is complete bullshit that they’re doing that. Telematics systems (OnStar, etc) have always been subscription based, and since they are essentially a cell phone plan I be been fine with that. But stuff like advanced cruise control or something petty like heated seats being subscription based is absurd. Fortunately, many new cars don’t do that game. So I suspect the ones that do will nickel and dime themselves into losing customers.

BMW backed off on their subscription model after *literally everyone* complained

Are you buying or leasing?

Tribe of Vehicular Luddites

I’ll join.
I drive the Honda S2K with the top down.
Always.
Can’t hear the bitchin’ stereo I installed. Phone? Ha!

Forgot about electric start. I use that feature everyday.
Wireless CarPlay is handy also. With having digital out a cable and find a spot to sit the phone I don’t even bother using it.
Those TLX’s are sweet cars and would definitely be on my list to check out if I were shopping for a new car.

Lease. I was all set to finally break my streak of Acuras (I have bought or leased 8 of them in the past dozen or so years), then my buddy who is a sales manager at my old dealer messaged me with a smokin deal. They take back my car a year early, and lease me the very last TLX (out of production now) for a staggeringly low payment with nothing out of pocket. Guess he had lots of incentive money to put in the deal. Cap cost reduction was something like $13k from a $52k sticker.

I was getting close to considering the new VW Tiguan (as a lease of course). All the modern bells and whistles and massaging seats?!? Yeah, I don’t care if it drives like every other boring crossover, that sounded like a great daily driver,
