Took in another almost brand new Tesla in trade last week. 2 month old Model Y Performance. After the usual playing with the “horn” making fart noises and such then clearing out the previous owner’s data, I’m poking around the cabin and see a tiny little camera above the rear view mirror looking into the cabin. What is this part of the dash /sentry camera system? Nope. Can not access that footage anywhere.

Googled it and it seems, this has been in Teslas for a few years now? The charlatan Musk claimed this is for monitoring the occupants should you ever “rent” the car out as an autonomous taxi. But we’re not there yet. So what’s that thing really watching? Well…you. Making sure you’re being a good little beta tester for FSD, and you’re keeping your eyes on the road and not just completely checking out and playing candy crush on your phone or jumping in the back seat or whatever.

I’d hazard a guess that footage is stored in “the black box” for Tesla to prove you weren’t following your EULA just in case the self drive spazzes out out runs you into a parked truck or something.

Or is this old news and this got covered in this thread a hundred pages ago?

I just don't like the fact that a manufacture with a nefarious employee(s) can remotely shut down my car.

They software lock the range too, which is complete bullshit.

Wonder what happens if you cover that camera with Vaseline or electrical tape?

That particular camera, nothing happens probably.

A few different things here(?):

yes, it is "old news" that the camera exists--but that's only because that camera doesn't help the driver for anything.. yes, really. They've put a whole camera there that doesn't help the paying consumer (right now.)
What I remember was they have been critisized for years, past 2, 4 years or more, that they're not using the camera to monitor the driver for falling asleep--as opposed to Mercedes, which does it for safety, when the driving-aids are activated! (it requires the driver to look and be alert.)

As to whether they'll use it against you, EULA or not, to prove you've been negligent, I don't know. I think it suffices to say that the Autopilot is made to turn off parts of a second before crashing, that's bad enough.

At least a couple other manufacturers have a camera to watch the driver. I know for sure GM’s Supercruise system will shut off the hands free driving if the camera sees the driver’s eyes not watching ahead. But that camera is right there in the instrument cluster directly watching the driver. Not sure how Tesla’s little fisheye camera centrally mounted way up high is going to see a driver’s eyes. I mean, what if I’m wearing a hat? So yeah, I’m pretty sure they just use it to collect evidence to use against you in case they get in a liability situation with their FSD.

Huh? It's pretty normal for cars to have that driver monitoring system with cameras. I believe on the Tesla you can also pull up that camera video from the app.

Have you really not seen this on other cars?

LOL, wanna know how I know someone doesn't read (sometimes).

(He didn't say there are no cameras on other cars)

,,,Not sure how Tesla’s little fisheye camera centrally mounted way up high is going to see a driver’s eyes.

so it looks like they purposefully or absent-mindedly have already engineered it so it can NOT help with Autopilot/FSD driver-being-away issues.

I do read. You're both wrong. That camera is used for driver monitoring of those that have the FSD Beta. If you don't pay attention to the road you get a strike. 5 strikes result in your Beta being taken away until another update.

I have seen a lot, and I mean a lot, of different kinds of cars. I believe Honda has a camera that watches the second/third row of the Odyssey and you can see the image on the infotainment screen. But this is the first camera I’ve seen that watches the whole cabin and you have no access to what’s being recorded.

So again, what happens if the driver wears a hat? That camera up high won’t see the drivers eyes at all, let alone if they’re paying attention. Or is there some wording in the FSD opt in that if you obscure the camera from seeing you, they take it away?

LMAO, I am the cultist for pointing out easily verifiable facts? :laughing

LMAo, no, lol, any "five strikes" person is a bad boy and will be excluded from the cult... :cry :laughing

The system uses both the cabin camera and the steering wheel torque sensor. The camera is an additional driver attention aid to the torque sensor. If it sees that you are inattentive it gives you a sound alert.

Also, the video never leaves the car unless data sharing is enabled by the driver. This is stated explicitly.

This isn't specifically what the camera is used for. It actually monitors if you pick up your cell phone and stuff. The second it sees your phone in hand it will sound an alarm.

Stupid question but does this chart ( I saw it on Digg), mean that a car basically costs nothing to make and most of it is battery costs?

How can the battery cost nearly as much as a new car with new battery?
