Tesla Model 3: End of the Internal-Combustion Engine?

Stupid question but does this chart ( I saw it on Digg), mean that a car basically costs nothing to make and most of it is battery costs?

How can the battery cost nearly as much as a new car with new battery?

At those prices!...
Looks like I will be driving a pre smog classic car for the rest of my life :laughing

I'll be a monkey's uncle if I ever own a vehicle with a camera that watches the passenger compartment.

"Cost of replacement battery" probably includes paying for logistics, labor, parts markup, etc on a replacement battery, not the actual cost of the battery.

Tesla does have some of the best car margins in the buisness by making their own battery cells, better from cell factor and now Tesla is in the lithium refining buisness.

To be fair, it is harder to do a remove and replace at the service center than on the vehicle assembly line.

To be unfair, those are "stealership" prices. Just like with hybrid battery replacement, 3rd party places will be the low cost way to replace the battery.

A BEV has a advantage over a hybrid because the BEV can pug into the grid and property ballance the charge on each cell.

I replaced the battery in my yr 2000 Honda Insight twice with referbished pack from these guys, https://www.googleadservices.com/pa...2kp5f6AhVSSDABHR8TDicQ0Qx6BAgEEAE&nis=8&dct=1

City of Cotati just added a new squad car.

We have one of those patrol cars in Fremont, unfortunately it ran out of juice during its first chase and was towed back to the precinct.

I'd drive one! :thumbup

That's a traffic enforcement car. Not a car used for regular patrol. With the range and demands of a marked patrol car, I don't think EVs are ready for that yet. But for the narrow limited use as a traffic enforcement vehicle, it would be cool to try out.

Our department was looking at the possibility of a Ford Mustang Mach E as a traffic enforcement car, but I don't think that's going to happen. Seems to be too soon and Ford doesn't have a police package yet.

For some time now I always wear sunglasses in public. And a hat. And a stocking mask.

Especially while driving.
I have some glasses with a nose and mustache too. My fav.

I came across this vid of a CNN test of "self driving".
It is at least a year old, but...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PMu7MD9GvI

I think most driving is too complex for a bunch of sensors and a computer to handle. Too dynamic. I5 maybe, but not where shit is constantly changing.

So, the Post office is trying to replace the current delivery vehicles.

If anyone has has been noticing this, you may also know that the EPA and some state governments were suing because, "not enough of the new vehicles are electric". They had chosen a near 90% gas / 10% electric fleet.

Well, electric version of the 'Next Generation Delivery Vehicles' that have been in use already, have failed miserably in the cold weather.

I've only been hearing rumors. But it sounds like a number of them have already been returned to the manufacturer, and they may cancel all remaining orders.

To be fair, it will sit and run A/C with cops in it just like any other patrol vehicle.

:laughing yea it's staggering how many vehicle sit and idle outside my local police station. I was like this is costing police department millions annually but that's why they get bigger budgets annually. We used 60k in fuel monthly and now fuel goes up so we need 80k

How does a Tesla handle construction flaggers and seeing a vehicle five cars ahead with its indicators flashing, I suspect it’s not likely to switch lanes so you’re not stuck behind that car waiting for oncoming traffic to pass so left turning dude can get out of your way.

.

Saw two pictures of Teslas stranded in the rain in San Francisco today.

The weather is 50s

It's going to fire them one way or the other.

Tesla Investigated For Two Motorcyclists Killed In Autopilot Crashes

... and this is a motorcycle forum... :dunno I Think it's obvious that any underbaked auto-system is a danger to motorcyclists, etc.

The NHTSA wants to verify if Autopilot was indeed activated in these two crashes that occurred in darkness, on freeways.

I guess we, as motorcyclists, have to assume all cagers are incompetent morons trying to kill us.

Wait. I already assume that. Fuckin' morons. I have seen a bunch of crashes in the last weeks. Some in progress...

Autopilot? I haven't seen any cause yet reported:
