Get Fit, Stay Fit, Feel Good - 2026

Unbound was today. The woman’s finished was a nail biter, men’s was meh. Overall though the race was exiting because of the weather.

Lifetime is still missing the mark w their YouTube channel and it’s making it really hard to watch such long bike races. 🫤

I’ve been getting up at 4am to watch the Giro d’Italia live on HBO Max … Mr Sepp Kuss and Stage 19 in the Dolomites, ftw. :angel :flag

last stage, tomorrow, and I won’t know what to do with myself until July when I’ll get to see how Mr Vingegaard’s training ride this May has prepared him for the Tour de France. :laughing

my get fit, stay fit, feel good update is I’m still averaging 12k steps/day in 2026, which was my daily step average in ‘25. for a nod in the general direction of progression, I added a minimalist daily-ish dumbbell workout as a New Year’s resolution (the dumbbells have been following me around for years, generally collecting dust in the back of a closet).

my wife set me up with a gimme wall calendar and kiddie stickers to award myself every day I pick the dumbbells up. it’s low-tech, but since I’m childish, it’s been working pretty well to help keep me motivated and more consistent, so far. :clown

anyway, enjoying the training insights this thread provides from the racers and others. has helped me understand a bit more what the commentators are talking about during the stage races I love to watch, when they talk about pro-racer nutrition and training regimens—and it’s also fun to hear about what we’re all doing. :ride

Gardened all weekend. But, I wanted to pass 100 miles for the month.

The seat is about 5mm higher and feels way, way better. I went up my favorite short little climb and zoomed back down feeling good.

I think part of my problem has been that when in Oregon I’m sedentary until I leave to work out and my body feels wooden by that time. In SF I leave and am immediately on the move and stay on the move.

May was a reasonably big month for me, in hours and distance. It’s the most hours I’ve done in a month this year. So much of my riding was at endurance pace with Z2 HR, which really keeps the fatigue low and lets me ridie again the next day.

But today is a lifting day and I’m already tired just getting out of bed. Let’s c how this goes 😅

More data!

Screenshot 2026-06-01 at 9.01.16 AM.png

kJ on the right column is a measurement of work done. It's calculated using my powermeter. I dont get kJ data for lifting or yoga because there is no powermeter. In cycling, output kJ's are roughly equal to Calories burned. So I burned ~34k Cal on the bike in May. We can probably assume I ate half of those calories while on the bike. So 17000Cal / (4Cal/g) = 4,250g = 9.4lbs of sugar. Yep, that sounds about right 😜😂

I am finally getting the band back together at Red Dojo with Sunday instructionals. I had two students come to train yesterday, one is a prospect for knock down karate tournament and the other is getting ready for IBJF in July, and I'm an outside instructor for his prep. Training in Texas heat in the garage is a doozy.

I've been going two weeks on meathead workouts and 1 week de-load with jump rope, FlowRope and Dopamineo band (that's this week). Knuckle push-ups and bodyweight fast, agility, mobility stuff.

My GF is a personal trainer at my gym and class instructor (yoga, pilates, hyrox, etc.) and I've been telling her I'm just fat, and she argues no. So I finally did the InBody scan and here were my results:

InBody_05_31_2026.JPG

A few takeaways I got from this was that my fat free mass was 30% over average, and my skeletal muscle mass is high. I don't like the fact that I'm 20% body fat, but for a guy who is not a bodybuilder and need explosive, calorie burning power, I am okay with it, and it's still leaner than the general pop. The other thing is that trying to lose that fat would also effect my skeletal muscle mass. My overall muscle balance is good, too with a large percentage of my lean muscle mass is in my trunk - exactly where I need it to be to be able to man-handle people. I just don't have a thin waist (34in), but if that's because my girth is in the form of muscle, I'm okay with it. Also, my Whole Body Phase Angle measures cellular health and integrity of cell membranes, and at 7.8 is a reading for highly active individuals and athletes.

At 51 years old and 211lbs. I'm okay with these numbers.

I'm not a tech-wearable guy, and I hate tracking fitness numbers, but this was eye opening for sure. Also got my blood work done, and looking all good there. My testosterone levels are over 1500 😆

What equipment did that InBody scan use? Fancy scale with electrical contacts on feet and hands?

20% BF is probably healthy and good looking for most adult males. People often have a really skewed idea of body fat percentage. Our ideas of what looks good and what is healthy can be way off. And everyone is very diff with how/where we carry that fat and how that impacts looks and health. Here’s a cool vid I found a while ago that tries to shed some light on it. The problem is especially bad for women.

Yeah, my abs and obliques are pretty defined, considering, but I just don't really care, honestly.

I really don't care about any tracking or numbers - I was putting it off for a long time and my GF found an opportunity to get it done - she does hers consistently and she is an absolute athlete. A woman at 16% bodyfat with ballerina calves as big as mine is pretty awesome.

I'm kinda like whatever about it all. I'm really not into fitness numbers at all. I don't count reps, and I'm not trying to win at anything anymore. I don't even have fitness goals. I look at working out and training kinda like brushing my teeth. It's a little boring and not really exciting. The only excitement I get out of working out is learning a new jumprope trick, honestly. Obviously, martial arts is the big one and I get really happy about that. But I'm not competing, nor will I ever compete again, so it's just information for me.

As long as I can pick up grown men, slam them on the ground and choke them unconscious, do tricks on a BMX bike and pick up weights and put them down, I'm fine with my old, fat ass  .

those aren't bad numbers at all IMO, Dion...especially as active as you are. 1500 Test...are you taking anything or that's all natural? That's H as F!

Oh it's totally natural :rofl

Hell no, sir. I started on TRT when I was 48. When I first got tested, I had a T level of 385. And of course, the PCP was like, "oH tHat'S ToTaLLy n0rMaL FiR a mAn yEr aGe!!" And I'm like, "neeya, don't give me no bullshiiiizzzz". I didn't want to feel like an old man, I wanted to feel well.

At first I went to a "wholistic" doctor who got me on a weird detox thing and a artichoke tea diet(?). I lost weight, and I retook my labs and came in a gigantic 534! Woohoo! Time to hit the nightclub scene, gents!

I got a prescription through an anti-aging clinic and moving out of state, went with another provider.

I fucked up my endocrine system when I was competing in bodybuilding at a young age, and with all the head trauma I experienced, I wasn't right for years. I had a serious head injury where I fell to the concrete from 8ft. up filming a BMX trick in 2014. I wasn't wearing a helmet, but the impact was so bad, I still would've been concussed really bad. I wasn't right for years after that. I was really confused why I had suicidal ideation night and day, and always angry.

Of course, I hit my head again on a miniramp weeks later (this time with a helmet), and then coming home from boxing with headaches and dizziness. I was doing this in my mid-40's. It's kinda why I stay away from striking sparring these days.

With TRT, the first thing I felt was emotional balance. It was like a darkness was lifted and I had clarity and I felt well. The body composition came along with it, but I'd say the best thing about TRT was feeling like a man again, and not all depressed and suicidal and beta-male. It was a game changer for sure, and so much better, happier, balanced, clear and my energy is stupendous. I'm not all weird and emotional nor do I suffer from anxiety. I don't know why men shy away from it. Stuff got such a bad rap in the whole steroid thing. I took real steroids, and they didn't do what TRT does. Real steroids make you feel like Superman, this just makes you feel like NormalMan.

Also, the martial arts community is young. I am geared young, mentally, and my peers and training partners are all young. It's nice to be able to keep up with them. My joints and ligaments are old, so I have to keep hyper aware of injury, but I'll take it over not training with the young guys. When I teach, I also have to demonstrate, and it is very taxing, so it helps there, too.

When women have hormonal changes, there are a lot of medical resources for that. When men start to drop in testosterone, everyone says "it's normal" and that man often times goes through a lot. And then people say it' "cheating". It's not cheating, it's wellness, and I recommend all older men to take a look into it.

My body is dying. I'm in the last 3rd of my lifespan and then I'm dead (if I live long). If I can go into my golden years feeling well, I'm gonna do it with science backed medical help. Otherwise, I'm destined to get old, feeble, weak, and getting into arguments on Facebook (or BARF) about Trump.

*my GF is 17 years younger than me, an athlete, ballerina, yoga chick, runner, sweetheart, and a raging 10 with long jet black hair down to her waist, so TRT!

Good post Dion....best one I've read on TRT. Eventually, every guy who cares is gonna end up on TRT and like you said: Women have been doing estrogen (And testosterone) programs for decades. My entire goal is to wait as long as I can to go the TRT route...keep things natural as long as possible cause once we go on it (at our age), there's no going off.

Yeah, it was a strange decision for me, and knowing that I'm basically gonna do it for life (well, as long as I'm active). My T levels were so low for the activities I wanted to do. The scary thing is, is that I'm talking to a LOT of men in their early 30's with super low T, like in the 200-300 range, and they're on it. I can put on my tinfoil hat about that.

Also, this thread does say "...Feel Good" and I feel great! I gotta inject every week, but I feel great :)

Aromatase. That's why they're on it.

I'll be bugging you when the time comes If that's ok. You're well educated on the T arena. Best to ask my questions to you cause we're near the same age....but hoping that'll be a long while.

Right on man! I’m totally open about it. :)

So, a medical doctor didn't give you the answer you wanted about how you were feeling. You doctor shopped until you found the treatment you wanted and are posting to tell us all you aren't "cheating" even though you have a test level three times higher than that of men in their 30's. You also make a case that you might have CTE and used PED's in the past. I'm not trying to pick a fight with you Dion. (You would easily kick my ass and my only real hope would be to outrun you) but, I'm also not going to pretend I didn't just read what I read.

I'm sincerely glad you feel great. I wouldn't consider anything you wrote health advise though. You are not just replacing your lost T, you are well beyond the range most people consider normal or safe.

A testosterone level as high as 1500 ng/dL is most commonly attributed to external factors rather than natural bodily overproduction. The most prevalent cause for such significantly elevated levels is the use of exogenous testosterone, which includes unmonitored testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) or the abuse of anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are synthetic forms of testosterone often used to enhance muscle mass and athletic performance...Discovering a testosterone level of 1500 ng/dL necessitates immediate consultation with a healthcare professional, such as an endocrinologist or urologist. Self-treatment or ignoring such a significantly elevated level is not advisable due to the associated health risks.

While higher testosterone levels can bring performance benefits, they also pose several health risks. A testosterone level of 1500 ng/dL, particularly if maintained for an extended period, may contribute to cardiovascular strain, increased hematocrit, and potential disruptions in metabolic function. One of the primary concerns is the impact on cardiovascular health, as elevated testosterone levels have been associated with increased red blood cell production, which can thicken the blood and raise the risk of stroke and heart attack.

I think we are all free to do our own research and live accordingly. But, I don't think what you are doing is as risk free as you think it is and I'm not gonna blow sunshine up anyone's ass about something like that. This thread is about Living well and being healthy. Not everything that makes is feel great is indeed good for us.

Edit, Dion is it possible you have Androgen Insensitivity like this intersexed athlete? Maybe 1500 T is ok if you can’t actually benefit from it?

Again, Aromatase Mike. Many more middle age guys are on T cause of exactly that...that Dion referenced those in their 30's is insane, but true. Our goal should be to stay off T as long as possible, given once on it, it's impossible to get off (at an older age)...or at least close to that. Eventually, we'll all end up there if we want to hold onto our youth for a bit longer...and everything else we like about our activity levels.

On a personal note: it's his body and he operates at a high level with his activities. The only thing we really own in life is our own body, consequences-n-all. A high estrogen balance sounds more awful than T, IMO.

Oh hell yeah this shit fits so fucking perfect with not holding back when hitting women. If you can't cum from sex....cum from violence! :laughing

My life has been very good, and I’m happy and at peace. TRT really helped me with that. Yes, possible health consequences? So is riding motorcycles, bicycles, climbing trees.

Anyway, I thought I’d share and be open about something that has really helped me a lot. Peace out peeps! This was a waste of time.
