ADV/DS ride Lake Berryessa/Knoxville OHV/Rayhouse Rd.

Where exactly is this gate? I went from Knoxville/Morgan Valley(140) and turned onto Reiff Rd(140a) and then continued until it turned into Rayhouse Rd(40) and ended up at 16 but having a hard time remembering a gate.

Chad, when did you go? The Gate is only closed during the rainy season. Usually open during the summer. The gate is just past the houses a couple of miles and before the lake.

Isn't there a good amount of space between gate and ground? Just bring a heavy tarp.... :teeth

Maybe enough room to drag some bikes under. These are from Feb 2013 Gate was closed, but found out later it might not have actually been locked.

It's obviously locked now. (as of Jan 9th)

The locking mechanism that used to live inside the large metal post is broken or no longer used.

There is now a large "bike lock" type chain and 4 digit rolling combo padlock.

One of the homeowners up there doesn't really like people using the road... I wouldn't be surprised if he closes the gate even when it's supposed to be open.

A few years ago he felled at tree across the road just up from his house. My buddy and I found a way around it and when we came back he had cut the tree up some more to make it impassible. It wasn't. He gave us dirty looks and hollered at us from his yard. And the county went out promptly and cleaned it up once they found out about it.:teeth

While it's obviously wrong to block a public road, I can understand his frustration.

Many people do NOT know dirt road etiquette in that when passing a house/ranch/occupied barn etc on a dirt road.....slow to a speed that produces minimal dust. Blazing past a house like a Dakar special stage is NOT the way to win friends.

Well, someone should bring a Master Key and remove that. I'm sure that the county didn't put that on there. (they always use a keyed lock) That way any CDF or local Fire Dept. can open it if necessary

Wish I could have gone on Sunday. I have been trying to catch up on house projects after the holidays. I like the master key idea. Cut the chain and add our own combo lock. I see a lot of chain locked roads with multiple locks when I work rural routes. Might not be noticed as much and stay on longer. Hope to ride next month and check it out or go around gate again. Maybe we will get a little rain by then to make the ride a little more adventurous.

I'll be going on more of these rides in the coming months. Hopefully, I will see you kiddies in Feb.

Hmmmm...given that Super Bowl Sunday is the 1st Sunday in February...I may be present on the next one.

Not possible with these type of gates a bolt type of a lock, room for one lock only. My guess is a small work party and build a path around it, each person bring a tool or two. Folding saw, small pick and axe folding shovel and work on it a bit at a time so we bring no attention to ourselves. This is the adventure page right ? where heres your chance at a adventure. :sniper

I am definitely in. I have a chainsaw, too, or is that not "stealth" enough? :laughing

Me too. My new job has me flying to Detroit every Sunday 'til Jul, but I'll be scheduling Mon flights once/month :teeth

Bridge out on the road?

I was up there 2 weeks ago and there was a sign a mail back saying that the road was close due to the bridge being out.

But you can definitely get around that gate on the left side or the right if you are goatish.

The Bridge on the east side is ALWAYS "OUT".

Yolo County will no longer maintain this bridge and has warning signs posting it for "Zero Tons" capacity which always strikes me as funny. I guess it's a liability thing.

The actual bridge is a "low water" bridge and Cache Creek will flow over the bridge during wet years (sadly not this year). The bridge is pretty stout and made of heavy concrete.

Even with no maintenance it should last for at least a decade barring earthquakes or some other catastrophic event.

There is a K-Rail barrier on the east side just uphill from the bridge that makes it passable year round for motorcycles. Wide enough for BMWs even but probably not for hacks.
