Get Fit, Stay Fit, Feel Good - 2026

So morning meal is normal instant oatmeal and protein shake. Every other meal is 6oz give or take of protein and some limited carb usually veggies or sometimes 1/4 cup of pistachios. Not really calorie counting just something I had done before and it worked.
Can you give more details on your 6oz protein? I need some ideas for adding protein. I’m getting kinda bored of my diet rn.

Saddles are one thing that shouldn’t be broken in. If it’s not reasonably comfortable from the start, it’s likely the wrong saddle, at the wrong angle, or in a bad location. If you really like your saddle on the other bikes, it may be worth getting another one.

In cycling, “clutching it” is called “soft pedaling”. You reduce the force of your legs and just turn the pedals to cause a smooth shift. It’s all but required for shifting the front chainrings. When going small chainring to big chainring, this makes the shift work better. When going big to small, it prevents dropping your chain. Also, holding that lever in place when going small to big can help a bit - instead of just pressing it real fast.
The shape is good, it's only moderately uncomfy, and it's a WTB saddle which my butt really likes on the Vassago. I'll have @tag3 fiddle with it and we can make some adjustments.

I appreciate the tips on shifting. It's kind of a mind fuck having everything in a new location.

I can then go back to eating more/better calories for gaining muscle.
I think carnivore diets are the real deal. While I'm not on one exclusively, I end focusing the protein portion of a meal cause I struggle to eat enough of that alone. My dinner's are: Protein/ vegetable/ and/ or carb (starch)...but I'll prioritize the protein and veggie. In truth, I just eat the same thing most nights; blackened salmon and Brussel sprouts with vinaigrette glaze sauce.

95 degrees and sweating like crazy. Time for some ice cold water. The pile on the right is now 1/3 smaller and the stacked wood on the left was all split this evening. Probably won’t get any more done tomorrow since it’s the kiddos swim championship but will try and get in 20-30 miles on the bike and some more wood work on Sunday.

pretty much but I was just younger and roughly the same weight and I was working out kind of the same. weird thing about me is I tend to get to a certain weight and then my body stays there pretty much no matter how much I eat or exercise. Then some years later it decides that it has had enough of that weight then shoots for another one and I stay there pretty much no matter what I do. Hopefully this calorie deficit and ramping up of my metabolism by eating more often will help me lose weight quicker and once its lost I can then go back to eating more/better calories for gaining muscle.

Thinking about the difficulties...have you tried much with intermittent fasting? 16/24 hour fasts? I can't recall if we talked about this. One thing about counting calories...it's more of an insulin reaction (high) that drives fat storage. Dr. Berg talk about this at length and has good insight...videos on YouTube.

@tag3 noticed all my other saddles have the nose tipped up. So he’s gonna do that to this bike’s saddle.

I am basically carnivore. I can nail it (only meat and veggies) 5 days a week at least and most weeks 6.

FU bread… I love U … but I hate U… because of U there is more me so FU. When you’re toasted I love you…. But still hate U.

U bread mutherfucking evil life food!! :rant

Saddle angle is a funny one. Too far nose up likely puts tons of pressure on sensitive bits that you shouldn’t sit on. It can also hold the pelvis rotated rearwards, which can strain the lower back. Too far nose down and the rider will slide or rotate forward, may still sit on sensitive bits, and will weight their hands a bunch pushing back. That will also cause too much neck and shoulder strain. But it’s funny because saddles have curves and flip up at the back… so what angle is level?

Here’s my setup steps. Start with the saddle level - literally a clipboard with a level on it. Ride over some bumps while pedaling. If you find yourself shuffling forward - move the saddle forward. If you find yourself shuffling back, move it back. Rinse and repeat until you find a stable position. Then adjust the angle slightly to help distribute pressure on the saddle and eliminate hot spots. If you change the angle more than 1-2 deg, repeat step one. Once you’ve done all this, if you can’t get comfy or your legs are chaffing on the saddle or you have hot spots or the saddle is 3+ deg unlevel by any measure - the saddle probably doesn’t fit.

Saddles are like shoes or helmets. They all come in diff sizes and shapes, and everyone needs their own choice. Even diff saddles from one brand are diff enough to matter.

Feel free to PM me with specific issues if you want suggestions. And come by for a bike fit if you end up in San Diego 🥳

I wouldn’t be surprised if a high protein low carb diet is more compatible with being healthy in the American lifestyle than most other diets. I could even see vegetarian keto-ish maximizing health for that one by eliminating the issues with animal fats. Protein is satiating so you wouldn’t over eat and you’d build or retain muscle well.

But all you endurance athletes, hell no! Potatoes, rice, pasta… nom nom nom 😅

Yup. This bad ass endurance cyclist definitely needed carbs.

I may come to San Diego just for a bike fit. So neener!

my diet consists mostly of nuts. i graze on them all day long. squirrel in a prior life?
What kind of nuts primarily? Honest question, no BARF malarkey. SWMBO likes Brazil nuts and peanuts. I bought some Macadamias the other day from Costco, very enjoyable. I do like almonds and walnuts as well. As a kid in England, hazelnuts were a treasured Christmas treat. Poor times......

mostly almonds, pecans, walnuts, macadamia, and yes, brazil. peanuts too, but fewer of those.

although tonight i did have some pork. my dude was jonesing for some baby back ribs from our smoker buddy. i had 3. from the short end. enjoyed them, but it’ll be another month or so before i’m in the mood again. a little too heavy.

I tried one of Specialized's early 3-d printed mesh-thingie saddles a couple of years back. Riding from Alviso to Palo Alto on the Bay Trail, I pulled off to re-tie a shoelace, sitting on a concrete wall. OHMYFUCKINGGODWHATISGOINGON, my "sit bones" screamed as my butt contacted the concrete, It felt like each one had a hot poker applied to it, with force. SWMBO was concerned as I leapt up and yowled. What an uncomfortable 50 miles, and I listed that fucker for sale as soon as I got home. Ouch. I made a profit. Yes....... :)

I was using a 155mm, and have since been using a 143mm (Specialized S-Works Power Mirror, Ti Rails, 143mm) that came with my Leave R S-Works. The width made all the difference in the world for me. I don't have much in the way of a butt, and as such am surprised that I went with a wider saddle back then. 143 is super comfortable. I just bought another (the newest version), that I have mounted to a different dropper post. I am ditching the RockShox Reverb 200 (wireless powered) in favor of a mechanical BikeYoke Revive 3.0. Mounting a saddle to these is an exercise in frustration for me, although I have come up with a couple of tricks to make it less of a zen experience. Trick no. one is don't drink before mounting. Ahem.

If anyone that I am familiar with wants to try the RockShox Reverb 200 let me know. It is 34.9 mm dia. by 200 mm long. This doesn't infer a commitment to buy, simply try it if you want to and return it when you are done. I could leave the Specialized S-Works Power Mirror, Ti Rails, 143mm saddle attached if desired. We can arrange to meet within a reasonable radius from San Jose, or you can pay for shipping. I can also provide an extra battery or 2 so you can exercise the up and down, up and down motion to your heart's content.

This is an innuendo free post. :)

Not much into four-legged meat products here for some years now for dinner. Occasionally, whilst thinking about what to make for dinner, the peanut that is my brain thinks "make a burger". By the time I get to buying for said dinner, I am miles away from committing to beef. A nice piece of fish or perhaps, maybe a chicken sausage, or a marinated chicken breast make it to the grill. That is, if I plug in the grill at all. I do enjoy a nice little boneless pork chop on occasion. My wife (SWMBO) has been buying some veggie burgers from Sprouts that are surprisingly rather good.

Now, let's talk Mexican food for lunch, a whole different matter entirely! :). This retirement thing may make me fat or dead in short order :cry:rip
